And they'll contend next year, doesn't change why I'm presently pissed, lost my favorite Ranger in the past decade when the money that could have been saved also while obtaining the 9th over all pick.......the 9th for Talbot and Klein!!! Talbot got us the 57th which was then flipped for the 62nd, 53 picks later |

I never said every trade he's made is a disaster, he's done better with them than free agency but this failure to grab the 9th and run like a sissy girl has me at the end of my rope, it's been 15 years already......15 - HankdaTank
You did say you'd probably rather have Garth Snow as your GM last week. To which I spit my drink out. Because imagine being a fan of the team that traded a treasure chest for Vanek only to get a an empty safe upon trading him. Your mouse woulda been like dynamite in your hand haha |

Callahan got dealt everyone was thrilled for the most part, now we don't have a first this year and now all the sudden Sather should stick a cigar up his ass? How is that fair? - Slimtj100
I will admit, at first i was happy, but it was more a sad angry. losing Cally was a hit, i loved him, my fiance has his jersey. but he forced the rangers to trade him, his contract in 2 years is going to be horrible.
if you ask me now, would i trade Cally and 2 1st to get to the SC finals? i would say yes every single time. 50-50% at winning cup is a heck of lot better than what you start out with. |

Yeah Pete, in hindsight with the reports I can say that, but you are right. They thought maybe a better deal was possible can't hold it against them. If they actually landed Yak we would all be in a big circle jerk for the next 2 weeks. - mdw7413

What price FA can they realistically fit in tomorrow? 2 mil? 3 mil? |

I think if they sign their current RFA's to new realistic deals they don't have any extra money at all |

I heard they are gonna trade for Bickel and Staal, get rid of Nash and Boyle's salary and find a way to sign Williams. You won't be able to contain yourself by 3pm |

By the way. Can I say this because it really erks me (and no offense Jim but you are the leader on this parade). I hated that trade at the time. And I hate when I say that I didn't like, and still don't like that trade that people throw Cally's contract and numbers and being overall poopty at me as part of the argument, as if there were only 2 options, make that deal or sign Callahan. There was an option C and even D (Trade him for something else, or keep Callahan just for the playoff run and let him walk).
Yes, without MSL we don't get to the cup. But this was my exact worry at the time. |

once Martin St. Louis asked for a trade to the Rangers, it was going to happen. Cally is the only player realistically that was going to work salary wise that could make that trade happen

I wasn't a fan of trading him either but I'm just saying i see positives things Sather does. I understood why they traded Cally and let Prust go for instance. I was fuming when Prust left, but I'm not gonna hold it against the front office for eternity |

But again, just because he asked for a trade here doesn't mean we needed to grant it...
And you can still agree with the deal. But for those that were against it just know we are in the "Option C" crowd and using Cally's performances since as justification of the deal isn't valid. That's the only point I want to make about it.
And yes, I will concede the fact having Cally and not MSL for the 2014 run would mean not getting to the final. |

I'm just glad we don't have to take on Callahan's contract for another 4-5 years. In hindsight, I'm kinda glad we dealt those picks to get him out of here. Imagine having another 5 mill in the books. We might've had to let Stepan go... |

I really don't wanna rehash the Cally stuff again, but I will say this.
Before Cally was traded, there was a premature report that the Rangers were signing Cally to a 6 year 36 million extension and the majority of people on this blog were not happy about it.
"he'll never last that long the way he plays and will get injured"
"6 million a year for a 3rd line player"
it was mostly negative and I actually was somebody who said they were ok with it |

I was a fan of trading Cally! I was not a fan of trading those draft picks for a 38 year old forward. Cally was horrible that year if you remember. I was hoping they would trade him for draft choices and a serviceable replacement at the time, or, lower his demands. |

he's a hall of famer, and one month before the trade he scored 4 goals for Tampa in a 5-4 loss to San Jose.
Unfortunately, people are only going to remember the shadow of a player he suddenly turned into the 2nd half of this past year |

I didn't particularly like the trade at the time either. the draft picks thrown in seemed like too much. But you can't deny that we were picking up a more offensively talented player that was (and did) help us for a playoff run. Callahan was looking for too much money for a player of his style and his trade value wasn't going to get any higher. |

All I am saying is my dislike of the deal has nothing to do with Callahan, but the draft choices. And people seem to miss that looking back. Last year I would of rather the draft choices and $5M in cap space for someone than MSL. But would not take on Callahan's contract. No way. Not at the time, and certainly not now. |

It was 2 firsts for MSL with Cally thrown in. Not the other way around. Do not get this confused. |
