he's a hall of famer, and one month before the trade he scored 4 goals for Tampa in a 5-4 loss to San Jose.

Unfortunately, people are only going to remember the shadow of a player he suddenly turned into the 2nd half of this past year

He was 38. Was this really so unexpected? C'mon.

All I am saying is my dislike of the deal has nothing to do with Callahan, but the draft choices. And people seem to miss that looking back. Last year I would of rather the draft choices and $5M in cap space for someone than MSL. But would not take on Callahan's contract. No way. Not at the time, and certainly not now.

personally I have stated that I have been thrilled with the team going for the Cup. I am the complete opposite, I am still pissed they didn't trade their first rounder in 2012 to bolster that team's playoff run, another piece and that team may have gone all the way

I'm just glad we don't have to take on Callahan's contract for another 4-5 years. In hindsight, I'm kinda glad we dealt those picks to get him out of here. Imagine having another 5 mill in the books. We might've had to let Stepan go...
- Jimboou

I think what Tom is saying is that even if you didn't want to re-sign Callahan, you could have dealt him in a separate deal that didn't require the team giving up 2 1st round picks.

In retrospect, I think the deal was a pretty bad deal, the impact of which was blunted by getting to the Cup final last year. But in the end, all first round picks aren't built equal and the ones that the Rangers gave up where virtually second rounders anyway. Not a great deal, but I also don't think it hurts the organization that much. I have almost just as much confidence in the Rangers drafting at 55 then them drafting at 28-29. I don't think there is a huge difference for the Rangers with the way they've been scouting.

if we had won the Cup it would have been worth it.

Instead, we lost 4 games to 1 and 3 of the losses we couldn't buy a goal in 3 double overtimes

I really don't wanna rehash the Cally stuff again, but I will say this.

Before Cally was traded, there was a premature report that the Rangers were signing Cally to a 6 year 36 million extension and the majority of people on this blog were not happy about it.

"he'll never last that long the way he plays and will get injured"

"6 million a year for a 3rd line player"

it was mostly negative and I actually was somebody who said they were ok with it

Think your misunderstanding my point.

We can agree that we disagree on the trade that is fine. My point I was making is do not use Callahan and the contract as justification for the trade, when I and others view Cally as an after-thought, and were more against having used 2 first rounders and the loss of cap space for MSL is all. Callahan has 0 to do with the dislike of the trade, that's all I wanted to get across.

but you are also saying that MSL was 38 and the Rangers should have known he would have been worthless by the 2nd half of this year, when nothing about his entire career indicated he would have suddenly become so ineffective

The Rangers march to the beat of their own drummer during when it comes to evaluating talent after the first round. They had Ryan Gropp as the 6th rated forward on their board. So, from their perspective, they knocked it out of the park getting him in the mid second round.

I only mention this because while I am sure that the Rangers would love to draft 28 or 29, I am not sure how much of a difference it makes to them if they draft 15 picks later, because they mine for the guys they like after the can't missers get drafted and I don't think they give a rat's ass about McKenzie's or Button's big board.

That is true. Would you mind turning up the air conditioning, so that your gf and I don't have to get out of bed. And, if you could throw together a couple of smoothies that would be great as well.

Separate point; where I began to argue that trade again when I should of avoided it beating that dead horse again.

It was 2 firsts for MSL with Cally thrown in. Not the other way around. Do not get this confused.

I heard they are gonna trade for Bickel and Staal, get rid of Nash and Boyle's salary and find a way to sign Williams. You won't be able to contain yourself by 3pm
