The more I look at it the more it makes sense if you can't add Frolik or Williams for 3-4 yr deals via free agency then just stand pat and give Colburne, Ferland, and other young players an opportunity to grow into that role.

Why lose pieces that may be needed later when you could have that player ready to step up.

But also we don't want kids playing roles they aren't supposed to. forcing a kid to play out of position can hinder the development of others as well. Thats why a player like say williams or richardson on a short contract fits. Both are players that playoff contending teams like to pick up at deadlines, both work hard. and both will get dirty when needed....which will keep people from taking liberties on the gaudreaus and like out there.

fighting for spots will only help this team and not make kids think, hey we made the playoffs...i'm worth 7mill.

I think its safe to say

JG, money, hudler, backs, bennett, bouma (is he going to get signed?), staj, colborne, ...and probably jones unless traded. so centre spots are filled. BUT, would be great to get better FO% out there (richardson maybe could help there on the 4th line, ease bennetts in with some more time on the 3rd line wing).

ferland earned his role I think. and both poirier and granlund have shown that they can be consistent putting up numbers in the AHL....are they ready.

Jooris, was great last year....but can he do it again? Or is he the next byron, all heart and has hit the ceiling already?

GlenX is gone, so have one more older guy with gritty floating around is not a bad thing. Stajan/hudler are great mentors, but they aren't going to make sure that JG is shoved around like he was against ANA. And with Lucic on the west coast now there will be some dirty games (Kassian didn't play against CGY either, he could have taken some of the ferland heat off bieksa.)

Just saying, lets not rely on the young forwards yet. I think one more year and the reigns will firmly be handed over once bennet shows he can play his feisty game for a season. Lets leave the jumping the gun on the young guys to up north.

We have to be careful what UFA;s we sign. DH is going to be expensive. Im expecting a 7 year @ $48mill. Gio is going to be up there & we have Money & Johnny coming soon. We need to jettison some contracts like Wideman, Smid, Raymond & watch Engellend go away in 2 years as well. Frolik will be too expensive. UFA's are usually too much money for too long of a term. Acquiring DH means we need to back off from any shopping sprees.

What do you see about the goalie situation? Wideman & our 2016 1st for Gibson?

Why??? Ortio is just as highly touted and Gilles exceeds them both. Wideman is Calgary's pp specialist and for the first time in years the blueline is solid.

Insulating their younger players ...it's what the flames have done so well ...Matt Stajan was our first line center for a while ...Monahan didn't have to be that guy until he was ready ( which was far sooner than anticipated ), Bennett didn't have to play center right away much like monny with our depth their, and now Hamilton who has already proven he can be a top pairing guy doesn't have to be right away..

he seems more of a down to earth, reasonable kind of guy who genuinely wants to stay in Calgary
Pay him fair, but he has to realize he's older and just had his best year that wasn't even a full year because of an injury. We all hope he continues to maintain that level, but when you're signing long term contracts you have to take everything into consideration including how that contract looks in 4-5 years
