He will sign.
The 9mm is a high start pt. He will sign 5-6 yrs 7.75 AAV. I expect Hamilton to sign a slightly lower AAV. Defense wins championships. - FLflames34
This ^^
Not sure why ppl are shocked by what gio should be getting paid and what a lot of teams would pay dougie |

Why??? Ortio is just as highly touted and Gilles exceeds them both. Wideman is Calgary's pp specialist and for the first time in years the blueline is solid. - Kraqule
Imagine starting this year with Gibson/Ortio while Gilles is ripening in the AHL. One of these 3 are bound to step up & be our franchise goalie of the future. What if Ortio doesn't have a successful year coming up & Hiller is gone the end of next year. Just saying, no guarantee Ortio is going to be better than Gibson or Gilles for that matter.
I have hope on Ortio but I'm not totally sold on him yet. |

Question for flames fan; how does it feel getting DOUGIE!?
also what does it mean for Wideman? Is that who you would want / expect to move? Why is that? age? or are all 4 staying?
Is this the top 4?
Giordano - Hamtilon
Brodie - Wideman
Pretty kool - AlfieisKing
Actually, I like Russell better & yes age is a factor as well. Hartley likes to play 3 guys with mega minutes. We know that will be DH/Gio & Brodie. After that, I see Russell getting the most minutes of the remaining 3. If Wideman only gets 10 minutes a game, including some PP time, his numbers are going down big time. I think you trade him while he is fresh off 2nd pairing minutes & top 10 points for a Dman. His value will be the highest. We could roll with him next year, but the year after that, we will definitely need his 5.25mill cap space, along with the 4.0 mill of Jones & the 3.5mill of Smids to resign Gaudreau & Monahan & Gio's new contract kicks in. |

I agree 100% and I fully expect another move to take place involving a goalie. I don't know who it's going to be but if I were a betting man, which I am, one of either Hudler or Weidman will not be in a flames jersey.
I think with are D it has to be Weidman so it will have to come down to a team looking for veteran experience and still a bit of money to spend. And a couple extra goalies.
I would be pushing for Martin Jones, hard to believe he's happy going to be a back up again.

well I'd be a bit disappointed if Gio actually is demanding 9mill
he seems more of a down to earth, reasonable kind of guy who genuinely wants to stay in Calgary
Pay him fair, but he has to realize he's older and just had his best year that wasn't even a full year because of an injury. We all hope he continues to maintain that level, but when you're signing long term contracts you have to take everything into consideration including how that contract looks in 4-5 years - cpltanto
(frank) man it a dumb report! Let's not get all T.O. on Gio. They'll get a deal done. And I am certain it'll be under 9 mil per. |

I think Gio will sign for about 8....I'm fine with it though, he's a great leader on and off the ice, not to mention he's REALLY good at hockey.
Dougie - I am not so sure, I haven't seen a ton of him. I would like to lock him up for around 6 if we could, maybe slightly higher in the hopes that his contract becomes a steal in about 3 years.
Good problems to have fellas! |

Not too long. I'm hoping for 4 years, but anything longer than 5 will be a mistake. |

Well if that's what he wants than they pretty much have to give it to him. It won't be shorter than 5 that's for sure. I don't see the difference between 5 or 6 years making or breaking whether or not this is a good contract. |

Wideman + for Gibson? I think you're living in a fantasy word Kevin! Boy would that be nice though.
I am a little bit worried about the goaltending for the immediate future. Seems to me like this team is going to be good for the next 3-4 years but now I see goaltending as their weakest link. |

5 allows us to sign him to a retirement contract that will better reflect his value to the team at that point and still allow us to be competitive. At 39, Gio's not going to be an impact player anymore... we can't have 7.5+ of cap tied up in a guy that's going to be playing such a limited role at that point. |

Looking at the pool of free agents I would be fine if the Flames didn't sign any of them haha. I am nervous about names like Beleskey and Stewart. Beleskey cause he wants $$$ and Stewart because he is Stewart. Seriously guys do we want Rene Bourque 2.0?!?! Stick a fork in that guy already.
I think Joel Ward might be the safest bet. He won't get as much as Beleskey, and you can never question his heart and work ethic. Sure he might not be the biggest name out there, but we do need a RW and I think he would fit well with the identity of this team.
I just hope we stay the course, because it's tempting to think about what the Flames could do with a little more punch up front. |

Wideman & a 1st isn't that far off the going rate, look what Lehner got & that was the best return. Gibson has had injury issues & hasn't taken the NHL by storm, but the kid is young. Yeah maybe a little dream world. :-}
Wonder what Dallas want for Lehtonen if they wind up signing Niemi. & I still think Howard would be a decent mentor/ gap placeholder for Ortio. They want a RH Dman & Wideman might fit that need if they miss out on Sekera & Green.
I think Brodano & DH/Russell are pretty (frank)ing good top 4 capable of going deep in playoffs. Engellend isn't really moveable & Im OK for another year with him in that bottom pairing. Do we sign Schlemko cheap or have we got enough in Tspoon/Morrison or Nakaladas to fill that #6 & 7 spots. DH allows us to let Kylington & Larssen to develop & the timing could be perfect.
Goaltending is a concern but not critical going into next year as long as we got Hiller & Ortio starting. The following year could get a little tense. |

I wouldn't be prepared to trade Wideman and a 1st for Gibson....but maybe since Boston is going bonkers we could get Rask out of there?
I am not necessarily concerned about the goaltending, but I think the rest of the team is now ahead of it in terms of where we want it to be. What a difference a year makes.
EDIT: With regards to the D, I think we should sign Shlemko as the #7 and let the Nakladal's, Spoons, Morrison slay it in the AHL next year and then we can re-evaluate next off season. |

Don't think a 5year deal will be any cheaper than 7.5 Avg, which is fine by me. DH will probably be a 7 year $48mill country. Again probably higher than everyone wants but I don't mind an overpay for the first 2 years. Need to be very very careful on signing any UFA's. We may have cap space now but things change drastically this time next year with Gio/Hudler/Monahan/Gaudreau all coming up. |

I feel like we'll be pleasantly surprised by his contract. Just like we were with Brodie and Backlund. My guess is 7 million.
Loving the Oiler fans laughing about how he might want 9 million.
1) Asking for a price above what he'll actually get is Negotiations 101
2) The Oilers would love to pay overpay Gio that
3) Trading Barzal and a 2nd for Reinhart would make me uneasy as a fan
