So I'm assuming Johnson backs up Lehner this season unless we sign a UFA goalie. What about our younger goalies? Are we planning on keeping Ullmark/Makarov in the system, or if Lehner pans out to be a true #1 do we consider trading them, or do we keep them in the system to back up Lehner? Just a hypothetical situation for the future.

And what's the deal with Hackett? Will he be re-signed or not? Not sure how I feel about him yet.

perfect world IMO johnson is in rochester, my guess is they feel good about him as a backup in the NHL

ullmark/makarov will be in rochester, my guess

hackett goes bye bye

petersen stays in college

I'd like to see them sign a free agent kid even if they stick him in the echl

ullmark and petersen have huge upside and my guess is they will both be ready in two yeas if needed and makarov can come up and be a back up this season if needed

my 2 cents

baker had a great response regarding ror, eichel, reinhart and girgens

Kris Baker ‏@SabresProspects 6h6 hours ago

@ChuckHallifax not sure. I'd try all combinations possible in camp to find the right chemistry. Great problem to have.

Nice. Heard good things about Ullmark, forgot about Petersen. Not a big fan of Makarov.

If Johnson goes down, he can hold his own to play 2/10 games with the big club

If Lehner goes down, Makarov can play a heavy workload

I am not ready to dismiss him yet

Honestly, I still don't get the sense of urgency to BURN our 21st overall for Lehner.
We are not ready to win anything yet.
We have number of prospect goalies in minors, and, hopefully, one of them would be an NHL starter.
Again, why did we go out of our way to sign Lehner for?

because Murray feels he can be a top 5 goalie in the league

if murray is correct, you add 2 d men and the team will compete

right now they are probably better then everyone but the bolts, wings and habs in the division

get solid goaltending, they can be better then the wings, and the habs if price misses time

I don't love the deal either but with Lehner's age I think the plan would be that he's playing 65 games a year when we are ready to contend. I really think Murray sees this guy as the starter for the next 12 years, hopefully he's right

I just hope he does not deal with his Uncle anymore!!
Otherwise, more fleecing will be expected.

There are a lot of "IFS" in all of this.

I have 7 so far

I run two dynasty leagues for hockey, one is in its 5th year, the other is a friends and family going into its first offseason. I tried last year to put one together with HockeyBuzzers, but didn't get enough interest.

If anyone is interested in doing one, please PM me, looking for 10, maybe 12 teams.

Oh I agree he should be our third-stringer. I personally just don't see him as a solid starting NHL goalie, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep him around in Rochester. Ullmark I have higher hopes for in the future-perhaps a future starter if Lehner turns out to be a bust- but he is still a little young, and the hip surgery scares me a little. It'll be interesting to see how Petersen turns out as well.

I'm not too worried about it, just wanted to see what others thought. Lots of goaltending options is not a bad problem to have IMO

Maybe you should hold off on calling it a fleecing until we can see what Lehner can do in aa number 1 role. I wasn't thrilled about trading a first rounder for a goalie, but I'm giving the guy a chance before I poo poo on him. He is extremley young for a goalie still and has not been given a chance yet to show what he has in a starting role.

Are you trying to keep it in the Sabres family? I feel like it might be fun to invite some Laughs/Sens fans if you only need a couple more spots filled

About the same amount of "ifs" as the 21 pick turning into a top end player.

Actually Sabres D took a big hit in losing Myers. BoGo is good defensively that is about it and plays physical.

With the loss of Myers and Zadorov our defense is worse then it was last year.

- Jammerz04

NO WAY....Pysyk is going to step in and just eat minutes up, not make mistakes, feed our forwards and overall play with a chip on his shoulder, like a real NHLer who was forced to play in the minors all last year and now has his chance.

Our D is arguably better because Pysyk has a spot now (I said the same on page one of this blog).
