Garth really did a good job jumping up and getting quality where he had the chance and not overpaying.
Good job. Will be an interesting year for the Isles. |

seems like after Reinharts skating issues Snow is making sure all his D prospects are strong skaters. |

I didn't do a lot of reading up on this year's draft, so I'll just trust all the write-ups I've seen that say Snow did a good job. I'm not crazy about giving up Reinhart...I was more than happy being patient with him, and the fact that other d-men had supposedly passed him I think was more a reason to be OK with being patient, rather than a reason to move him. I still think a guy who was praised for his role shutting down the best forwards juniors had to offer in the WHL playoffs and Memorial Cup will develop into a solid NHL defenseman, even if he didn't set the world on fire in his first pro year. But, screw Reinhart...he's not an Islander anymore. I like what I've read about the kid they got at 16.
As for the line about people obsessing over big players...I don't think everyone who plays in the NHL has to be 6'3, but I would say, in a supremely obvious statement, that out of two players with equal talent, the 6'3 player will have an easier time hanging in there than the 5'10 one. More than just height or weight, I feel like a lot of write ups on Isles' picks in any year tend to include that line: "Not overly physical, but..."
It'd be nice to see that trend the other way: "This guy will knock your friggin' teeth out." And some picks have been like that...Mayfield and Pedan were the two more recent ones that come to mind (with one of the two actually still here and ready to compete). But I think while the Isles tend to go for the intelligent players, and have a lot of them on the team and in the system...sometimes in the early rounds of the playoffs the refs are more inclined to let 'em play, and you need some troops who can thrive in a street fight as well as ones who are more intelligent. I don't care if a player's 6'4 or 5'11...just be the guy knocking someone down once in a while instead of the guy complaining to the ref after the whistle. |

Umm - am I missing something here or what? How did Garth Snow flip the Rangers goaltender Cam Talbot to the Oilers?
"Snow was able to flip Cam Talbot Griffin Reinhart to Edmonton for the 16th and 33rd overall picks."

Snow had a good day, Reinhart is a lot to give up but those moves he made for Boychuck and Leddy continue to pay dividends. Their success and the depth they provided have allowed the team the freedom to make moves, I really like what he's done the last year. I'll admit that I used to think that he wouldn't be able to get anything done, but from the looks of the past year and the success they've had, I was wrong. |

Not sure what happened there, I thought he was projected to be a late first/second rounder? Or maybe that was a different Pilon... |

I am crazy about trading Reinhart. I'm tired of squinting hard to see anything positive about that kid's game while watching Rielly, Dumba, Hampus Lindholm, Olli Maatta and other d-men from later in that 2012 class look like future Norris candidates. |

Why are you putting this here? Go post it in the leafs thread. No one cares about Toronto. - Isles_since_6
Hey, Leaf fans are some of the more insular and hostile around these parts, especially lately. If this guy welcomes comments from other fan bases, then kudos to him. |

Size doesn't matter if you play bigger. Size doesn't matter if your size doesn't have you spending a seven game series getting kicked to the curb by your opponent. Size doesn't matter if you ARE faster and PLAY faster than everyone else on the ice. I don't mind having a (A, as in ONE out of six) defenseman or a couple of wingers on the smaller side if they are fast and dynamic offensively, and can at least pretend to play defense without getting b*tch slapped and abused by a larger opponent....but it's not a good idea to load your team with them. You're asking for trouble if you do that. |

2014: Possibility of no first rd pick, instead we walk away with two exciting forwards including a trade up to the TAM pick from the MSL Trade.
2015: De Ja Vu All Over Again
Two digs against the Rangers when you might consider that we outbid Talbot with Reinhart and they traded Hagelin, their top pk man.
But our forward talent needs to spend time in development and like the Rangers we need to address our core vets.
Hopefully some established lines this year and no more experiments. Snow has a trade partner in Chiarelli and Yzerman and Bergevin who put PA Parenteu on waivers today. If Bergevin is planning to trade or acquire another vet forward before July 1 open season, well not saying anything definite but...... |
