not with barzal in the system. Barzal is probably a better prospect at this point with how slow reinharts development has gone.

Honestly no. Pulock & Mayfiled both passed him by on the depth chart. That doesn't mean Reinhart won't be good just with the depth they had on D they couldn't turn down that trade.

He's going to coach his local high school in Minnesota. He'll be a regional scout for us there. Just wants to be near his family- can't kill a guy for that.

seems like after Reinharts skating issues Snow is making sure all his D prospects are strong skaters.

I still think Reinhart is going to be a solid NHL defenseman in the future. I think EDM did well to obtain him. There was a lot of smoke over the years about Reinhart wanting to go to Edmonton, not being "thrilled" to be an Islander. Where there's smoke there's usually fire.

I don't view the Isles moving Reinhart as them "giving up on him", as some have written. I think its more that the Isles moved a premium piece that was expendable with the re-signings of Leddy and Boychuk and the emergence of Pulock and Mayfield for forward prospect depth, whcich they needed more than defensive depth.

Four forwards in the last two first rounds is a great job of re-stocking the cupboard. The Isles are positioned to be solid in the present and the future wiht their cap situation, current roster and prospects. Things are falling into place nicely.

Winners

1. New York Islanders

Leave it to New York Islanders General Manager Garth Snow to break the mold yet again and be aggressive in pursuing the exact players he wanted. Just like in 2014, where the team traded up to acquire Josh Ho-Sang, Snow was again aggressive in dealing former fourth overall pick Griffin Reinhart to the Edmonton Oilers for a pair of picks. Coming into the draft, Mathew Barzal was considered a top-10 talent, but fell to the Islanders at 16th overall. Then, nearing the end of the first round, the team traded up to acquire Anthony Beauvillier, an impressive package in his own right.

The later rounds went to adding defensive depth, as all five of their remaining picks went to the blueline. They took a chance on versatile and engaging Mitchell Vande Sompel from the Memorial Cup champion Oshawa Generals, and another potential faller in Parker Wotherspoon. Sticking with the aggressive overtone, the Islanders pushed to trade up again in the fifth round to select Ryan Pilon, who is the cousin of Rich Pilon, a veteran of 12 seasons on the Island. Finally, Snow closed out the draft by selecting Andong Song, the first Chinese-born player to be drafted in NHL history.

The Islanders’ consistently aggressive approach to the draft has paid off in recent years, and this year was no different, as Garth Snow is quickly earning a reputation as an astute evaluator and a friend to his scouting staff.

Hearing that Thomas Hickey and #isles are close on an extension, should be done in next few days. In the $2-2.5 million range per year.

Likely a 2 yr deal
