Alright I took a whack at it:
https://www.hockeyscap.com/armchair-gm/team/8959
I made the kessel deal for what was "reportedly" offered, plus the 2mil retained. The 4th line does look a little soft, but there is 2+ mil in cap space I created. - drummer829
I like it, just some small changes. Move duper to left on 3rd, have BB be the RW on 3rd. More of a skill speed line. Comeau be on 4th line and sign Downie for 1 mil to be on 4th line. That more of a heavy, energy line that can score.
So bottom u are
Duper-Tik-BB
Comeau-Sund-Downie

That's a reasonable look at the roster. If you got Kessel, you really don't need to go big on the last spot. Very few teams actually use 6 true top 6 forwards these days.
You could balance out the toughness by going with a grittier player than Sheary (you have the space for Winnik, Wilson) or swapping Bennett with Dupuis or Comeau.
Edit although I don't think Toronto retains that much and takes all our cap dumps without getting more since the first deal wasn't enough. |

Completely agree. I think either Oshie or Frolik would be great additions in the fact that both their games compliment Malkin extremely well and would give him a creditable top 6 winger. - cap1681
What Malkin needs is a really awesome defensive player in the mold of a Jere Lehtinen or Patrice Bergeron and a player who can set picks and screens. Pittsburgh happens to have a screen who can score; solving the other position is probably best done in a trade. Winnik is a very nice defensive forward but he's not a scoring line player. |

That looks pretty solid, only thing I would change is the Sutter trade. I think the Pens need to have a player coming back. I would much rather try to get Ellis so you don't have to sign Franson to a big contract. Use the Franson money for some forward depth. That top line would be fantastic though, perfect mix of players.

Only problem with this is Kap is a right wing, right wing only. I hope to God Pens do not do what they did with BB, move him to other wing where never played and loses all confidence. Bc then im afraid we destroy him too. If Kap is on the team, needs to be top 6 right wing. Or keep him on Baby Pens. - mmonana120
I think Frolik plays both wings so not an issue. |

Have you been paying attention to the Stanley Cup Finals for the last seven seasons? - Johnny Wrath
Yes, but its not bc they BUY there team. They make smart moves and have adjusted there roster. They earn that Championship every year, they don't buy it. Think, if no cap. Chicago wont have to sell off Bickle, Sharp, Versteeg, maybe Crawford. They can sign Saad to as much as they want. With Cap, they have to pick there posion.
Before the Cap, how good were the Pens? Didnt we constanly have to sell of our best players bc couldn't pay them. |

The owner of the Penguins bankrupted the franchise. That's clearly not the same point as Pittsburgh being a sustainable market. It's still a small market by most standards. Pittsburgh made it to the Eastern Finals before selling off in a very big way months later in 2001 mainly because of ownership.
Speaking of which, Chicago was a black hole under it's immediate former owner. He refused to put games on television and their best forward was Kyle Calder. Changing the league into a cap league was pure coincidence with Chicago being under new ownership. I would say the same thing about Tampa Bay. |

As per the Blues site, Sobotka will remain in the KHL, does that increase their interest in Sutter? |

I think that is an extremely optimistic Kessel trade that has very little chance of happening. Leafs fans would be furious with that return. |

Tried doing some of my own research on Stalberg, strange patterns to his game. If he can sign a Downie-Comeau like deal in the 1 mill range that could pay off. Or it could be stupid and useless and do nothing. Either way buy out scuds already dammit. |

Among those incentives is "automatic spot among the Penguins' assistant GM posse". |

A good compromise on the retention would be 1M retained and one bad contract, preferably Scuderi's. Then it's a matter of making the rest work and who caves first. |

Maybe that Oshie trade becomes more likely now that they really need a center. |

I think a deal was in place until Ruth spit into his hand immediately before the closing handshake on the draft floor. |

Oshie and frolik on the team. - drummer829
Strong team... but us being near the cap just has me nervous after it backfired last season.
Edit: You do have an extra 650K in cap space, since Wilson would be sent down... assuming Lovejoy will be the extra man traveling with the team. |
