I came to the same conclusion. This is why I keep saying that if Toronto is dead set on moving Kessel and Kessel refuses to wave for a team off of his list, it's likely gonna become Penguins or bust for Toronto which would drive down his price.
Which lets think about it. Say the asking price comes down to the point that it's basically DP and some other assets. People are scared to do that trade because DP could go onto having an Olympian career and we'd regret it. I honestly don't understand this train of thought. Kessel is currently having an Olympian career and is a top scorer in the league. We'd be trading an Olympian in the area that we have some depth for an Olympian in the area where we have no depth.
So the next thing is cap hit. This argument is much better and it's a legitimate concern. However, if you think about it, we currently have two Olympians on the blue line in Letang and Maatta. If Pouliot ends up being an Olympian as well, how in the (frank) can we hope to retain all three?
I'm not advocating a Kessel trade, but if it does happen I don't think it's the death sentence people think it's going to be.
Strickland tweeted that the leafs told 1 team they would retain 2 mil of his salary - drummer829
If they're retaing 2 mil and they're taking Scuderi I start to find it hard to say no, even if Pouliot and Kapanen are going the other way. It would be like we never traded Neal away but still got Hornqvist and Neal was on roids.
So I hear Frolik and Semin? Lets get back on bringing some Semin all over Pittsburgh - Guile
That's the best way to fill the holes without hurting the farm. My unrealistic dream scenario is we get Oshie and Skinner without giving up Pouliot. But if the Canes insist on Pouliot, I go back to Semin, the appeal was always he wouldn't cost much and they would take Scuderi. I think I'd load up on depth options like Plotnikov and Comeau and save cap space before giving that much to Frolik.

This. When it comes down to it, Maatta is only cheap 1 more year, and Pouliot 2 more. And remember.
They're also getting rid of Scuderi in any Kessel deal. That helps the future almost as much as NOT dealing Maata would help the future.
I still hope Kessel is just a backup plan. I definitely prefer Frolik/Oshie. But it definitely wont be the worst thing ever to get Kessel, and then trade him again in 2 years once Kapanen is ready and Pouliot/Maatta (whichever they keep) are both expensive.
Kessel at 6 mil i can live with. Frolik is probably going to get 5.5. Put that in to prospective..... - joescullz
I think Frolik gets 5M at the most. Probably more likely 4.5M. Beleskey will be the big overpayment of the UFA class, because of his performance in the playoffs.

It's entirely dependent on both those conditions being met. If Dubas can get a few other teams interested on the list (or convince Phil of waiving), Pittsburgh loses all leverage. Toronto could also be willing to wait to move him in-season or next year. Also remember, Rutherford had COMPLETE leverage over Shero with Jordan Staal and still gave up a lot for him. Dubas has been ruthlessly efficient for TOR so far. I don't trust dealing with him.

Oh trust me I agree. I've had several long posts about how unlikely the Stars aligne to meet the conditions that it would take for us to get Kessel and it make sense for us, but it's still possible. See Iginla. I just didn't want to get into all of my reasoning again.

Although one thing I hadn't thought of moving forward, Frolik moght be a good counter balance to Kapanen or Sprong. That means not getting Malkin a real long-term wing this year though.

Iginla had a full NMC clause though. Some of those other teams on the list can get involved if Kessel can be acquired for below fair trade value. Dubas is gonna milk it.

Yes, but that was a bit of a last minute trickery by Iginla... If they want Kessel gone by the 1st which is a pseudo deadline... They might be forced into dealing him for the best he will waive too. This of course, is assuming they "have" to trade him this year, which in most of our minds, they don't.

Yeah Philly. That's really it. Even with all their draft picks I'm not sure they can beat a Pouliot centered package.

Speaking of the 1st, my sense is that if we're getting Kessel there's already a deal in place and it will become official the second he gets paid his bonus. If we don't get Kessel then, then Dubas has no issue holding on to him (as he shouldn't. Really no need to trade Kessel) and the Pens can't afford Kessel at his true value.

My hope is that Hextall overpays for him with his young dmen assets and he goes to Philly. It'd be a perfect spot for him. Zero defense, no pressure to win anything, and high level forwards to play with. Only issue is I'm not sure Vorachek or Kessel can play LW.

A Simmonds-Giroux-Kessel line would infuriate me...

Well, we can be hopeful in this regard... JR is IMMENSELY better at the UFA time for deals then he is at the trade deadline.
