Someone will take a flyer on him. Unlike past snipers with poor underlying stats (Setoguchi, Heatley, etc.) he actually has good possession numbers and there are clubs out there paying attention to that now. - jtommyt
I guess, lots of guys with good #s that are garbage IMO

Every year there are a few that rebound though. Semin might be that guy in the right situation. |

While you were defending your spelling errors, you managed to misspell "apostrophe". Just piling on James...I'm always on your side!! - clintyboy

The Semin buy-out bothers me. They buy him out for 2/3s of his salary, meaning they save roughly $2.3 million per year on the buyout (according to Matt Karash).
Now, the Canes won't be spending to the cap, so I guess real money is all that matters here, but I still think it's a curious - possibly terrible decision - because, for $2.3 million dollars, you can't get a player to replace Alex Semin
I think you are misunderstanding the Semin buyout.
He will cost 2.33 against the cap, meaning the canes get an extra 4.67 to spend on a forward. For nearly 4.7 million, Semins production can easily be replaced. |

Yawn would not surprise me if Westhead/TSN turned out to be one of the two sources. NHL says it is 100% false. |

It doesn' t matter how they spread it out, they're on the hook for two-thirds of the money, since they're not going to spend to the cap, it doesn't really matter if they absorb a smaller cap hit.
As far as I know, it's 2/3s the $ spread over twice the number of years left, so yeah you're right in the sense that this year they'll have that much extra money, but since they aren't a cap team, it's irrelevant - they still have to pay Semin all but 1/3 of his money.
I am not misunderstanding anything. At least, I'm pretty sure that I am not. |

If they are a budget team as you say, then its much better to spread out less money over more time for a player that isn't producing. So they essentially just gave themselves 4 million in extra budget space while not really losing a player of much value to them. |

Totally agree on your comment. I can't believe the rumor that Rutherford is considering signing him in Pittsburg this time. JR has got to be senile, especially if he goes for another dose of Semin. |

The thing is, you made a big deal about the canes not being able to replace his production for 2.3 million. For 4.7 in savings, its easily done.
You made it seem like they were only saving 2.3 next year, which is incorrect. |

They are only saving 2.3 million. They're a hockey team spending tens of millions of dollars, it really doesn't make any "real" difference if they spread the money out over a few years or not, they are saving 2.3 million per year on the contract and that is it.
Any other way of looking at it is just a technicality. |
