Going to be a long rebuild - Canada Cup
I don't think so.
max 2 seasons.
I'd love Leafs to offersheet Galchenyuk (even if they need to send away 1st, 2nd, 3rd, they'd have Pitts 1st and 3rd next year). That would speed things up quite a bit.
Parenteau, Winnik, Hunwick all signed two year deals; after that (or before) Leafs expect young players to fill their roles. Realistically, Marner Nylander and Kapanen all should be ready for an NHL job for the 2017-2018 season.
Trade Phaneuf, Lupul, Bozak.
Maybe sign another 1-2 UFAs on 2y deals. |

Was talking more about the fans. I'd say 3 years till we have a decent team and 5 till we're in a position to make some noise. How much noise depends on what kind of top end the kids develop. Still lots of uncertainty |

yes I agree, but can the fanbase take losing for another 2-3 years? You can hear it already starting. I want a lottery pick next year and the year after that, that means more losing and the Babcock sucks chants! |

I have always said Leafs should not 'tank' for next two years.
They simply can't afford it, and have some tools ($$) to be able to do a quicker rebuild.
A 5year 'rebuild' is ridiculous for an organization like the Leafs.(
(+ last few years were already 'rebuild years'). |

you're right.
if he works out really well, they might keep him, but they probably have Nylander in mind for lineup next season already. |

Our top prospects are VERY young - a few 18/19 year old forwards and some 20/21 year olds on D. There is really not enough in mid 20 year old group to form a leadership corp of any real strength.
There is loads of potential in this organization but it will take a while. I agree that we don't need to keep tanking and make the potential even younger but it will take a while for the pieces to develop, |

Dreger said may trade Bozak, but says they still need players.
Not sure what needing players has to do with dumping Bozak. They added 4 guys yesterday and removed one. Having bodies to fill the roster isn't an issue. |

Gotta hand it to Leaf fans, we are all just seemingly clueless.
Before Kessel was ever traded, I believe the consensus was that he was worth a 1st round pick, a prospect, and a salary dump roster player.
What did we receive?
Kapanen (2nd highest rated prospect in the Pens system behind Pouliot)
Harrington (a mid prospect on D)
Slaney (a roster player, but not a salary dump, the retained money is the salary dump)
a 1st
a 3rd
I would say we got exactly what we thought we were going to get |

well if he plays well enough, he may get the Leafs A 2ND + a prospect. |

8 team NTC.
what part of that do you not understand? - MaximusAurelius
Doesn't matter. His the not the first superstar with a ntc. They rushed the deal and showed their cards way too soon. Another bad trade |

That first could end up being a 2nd round pick in 2017.

It's he an RFA right now? If so I think that's a terrible idea. It would be pretty awful if Toronto won the lottery and shipped Matthews to the Habs. The Leafs pick should be top 5 next season regardless. |

No, it's now going to take more than 2 years.
And the leafs shouldn't and will not offer sheeting anyone.
Don't have enough picks to waste on something like that.
Edmonton is looking good. Glad to see they are back |

The part that I am not excited about is giving the 2nd, and retaining money
Kapanen seems to be all over the board in reviews.. and the mock drafts had him from 10-25
Overall a very avg return not a home run but they didnt give him away

So how much better should this deal have been? Maata, Pouliot (non-starters), no conditions, no $ retained?
Would that have made this an acceptable deal? |
