Doesn't matter. His the not the first superstar with a ntc. They rushed the deal and showed their cards way too soon. Another bad trade - Fakepartofme
It's comparable to what Bobby Ryan and Rick Nash got. What makes it a bad trade? The salary retention sucks, but that's just the salary of an expensive 4th liner. |

Our top prospects are VERY young - a few 18/19 year old forwards and some 20/21 year olds on D. There is really not enough in mid 20 year old group to form a leadership corp of any real strength.
There is loads of potential in this organization but it will take a while. I agree that we don't need to keep tanking and make the potential even younger but it will take a while for the pieces to develop, - Canada Cup
Rielly I see as future Leafs Captain.
You basically need to have 10 key players (6fw, 3d, 1gk) as a core to build from, and then can get rest through small trades / UFA signings:
6key forwards: Nylander - Marner - Kadri - JVR - Kapanen. that's potential 5 of 6, still need a #1 or #2 C. That's 2016 draft.
3 d: Rielly (#1 d), Gardiner (2nd pairing D if he pans out as he is supposed to). Maybe Harrington/Marincin/Percy or another young D from Marlies can fill the topline role, but almost certainly not. That means draft 2016.
gk: possibly Bernier. that's a big question mark. Leafs should try and trade for Gibson/Vasilevskiy.
So basically Leafs still need a #1C, top pairing D-man to play with Rielly, and a goalie.
Rest of roster (3rd line, 4th line, bottom D, backup goalie) can be filled through UFA or with current prospect pool.
Leafs have various ways to address these three main needs.
Ideally Gibson through trade (Phaneuf), and in draft next year get your C (ideally Matthews) or top D (Chychrun/Sean Day?) man. Alternative is to offersheet Galchenyuk and you have your topline C.
I expect Leafs to aim to draft a topline D first round next year.

No, it's now going to take more than 2 years.
And the leafs shouldn't and will not offer sheeting anyone.
Don't have enough picks to waste on something like that.
Edmonton is looking good. Glad to see they are back - Fakepartofme
With the signing of Letestu, it looks like Edmonton is planning on having Draisaitl in the AHL.
would JVR or Phaneuf be enough to get him? |

I don't think so.
max 2 seasons.
I'd love Leafs to offersheet Galchenyuk (even if they need to send away 1st, 2nd, 3rd, they'd have Pitts 1st and 3rd next year). That would speed things up quite a bit.
Parenteau, Winnik, Hunwick all signed two year deals; after that (or before) Leafs expect young players to fill their roles. Realistically, Marner Nylander and Kapanen all should be ready for an NHL job for the 2017-2018 season.
Trade Phaneuf, Lupul, Bozak.
Maybe sign another 1-2 UFAs on 2y deals. - MaximusAurelius
Yikes....so you are ok giving up the Leaf first next year?
*looks at roster*
Are you sure? |

Id like to see next 3 shown the door, Bozak, Lupul and Reimer |

true, or it could be a first this year or next.
No need to judge that pick before we see what it is - ILoveLamp
Let's hope the pens squeak in like they did this year. |

The part that I am not excited about is giving the 2nd, and retaining money
Kapanen seems to be all over the board in reviews.. and the mock drafts had him from 10-25
Overall a very avg return not a home run but they didnt give him away - senstroll
Guess we will not know until Kapanen reaches the NHL and we see what he is |

So how much better should this deal have been? Maata, Pouliot (non-starters), no conditions, no $ retained?
Would that have made this an acceptable deal? - Canada Cup
Maata would have been nice.h |

Yes, Leafs have enough picks to offersheet.
They already have an additional 1st and 3rd.
If I"m correct, Leafs currently have 2 1sts, 1 2nd, 2 3rds.
If they would offersheet, they'd have Pitts 1st and NJ 3rd still in 2016. |

Agreed. We pretty much got what most had hoped for (to varying degrees) and didn't include a cap dump.
But yeah, most concerned with giving the 2nd and retaining salary. |

two year re-build and you're counting on Nylander, Marner, Kapanaan and our 2016 picks? Did you not hear about the develop part of draft and develop. We're picking up some nice pieces but give them a chance.

Morning.
Anyone here come up with a good reason why what the Leafs took back was good for them in the long run? |

Positive is the is really young.. 2 months from being in the 2015 draft.
I read he was on a crappy low scoring team in fin league |

Freed up ~6.5 in cap space?
Better chance at Austin Matthews?
...that's all I got. |

With new setup of draft lottery, worst team in league could easily still end up with #4 pick next year. The fact that lottery changed, has the implication that offersheets become more interesting (because teams know what they get).
Galchenyuk is a #1C (former number 3 draft pick), ready to go. Draft picks will might need 2-3-4 year to get to that role.
I'm sure Leafs management would prefer Galchenyuk over the picks 2016. |

As per Ryan Wilson:
Extremely similar players at even-strength hockey. Basically Pittsburgh just picked up the American Alex Ovechkin who will now play with competent linemates.
If any Leaf fan or writer made this kind of statement he/she whould be lambasted for a century. |

yes I agree, but can the fanbase take losing for another 2-3 years? You can hear it already starting. I want a lottery pick next year and the year after that, that means more losing and the Babcock sucks chants! - shmenge
Yeah, we've got that under wraps |

How exactly is he a 1C?
First off he doesn't play center and has said he doesn't want to play center.
Secondly in 3 seasons in the league he has yet to crack 50 points.
I seriously doubt the Leafs would give up a top 5 pick next year PLUS a high second and third for him. |

We've had 1 good season in like a decade, I think we can handle a few more bad years. Especially if we land Auston 3:16 |

i agree ….still waiting to hear why Pouliot wasn't included. Were the Leafs/Hunter after Harrington? Or did the Pens say no way? …
Spaling is Winnik'ish ….may fetch a 2nd rounder at the TD. |
