all the guys saying 'this is an awful deal' are proving my point that there is no patience for a 'proper rebuild'.
heck, i'm one of the first ones on here to state that leafs should not do a 'full rebuild' going forward (several reasons) and I think it's a great trade.
ONLY 1.2mln (still 4.1mln left after Clarkson trade) and getting back a 1st, 2nd and first for Kessel... + apparently they resigned a proper replacement in Parenteau (again, his adv stats were quite good despite him being bought out).
was quite clear this was going this way.
now cue phaneuf traded with another 1-1.5mln retained - MaximusAurelius
Actually, I think the people saying this is an awful deal are totally willing to be patient. There's nothing patient about this deal. It was a rush job. |

I thought TOR was also sending a 2nd rd pick? - ImThatGuy
seems like they are trading two contracts, and getting spaling and another pick as well |

Bad trade for the Leafs but certainly not crippling. The 1st is nice but most likely low in the 20 range. Kapanen seems very good but that Dman looks okay. Retaining 1 mil for 7 years sucks but big whoop it's not going to prevent them from doing anything.
What people need to realize is that Phil had a very restrictive NTC and the Leafs weren't prepared to play chicken for 2 months to see if Phil and his agent would expand it.

Need to know what that second pick is. |

Seems like a fine deal - robin_steele264
Both teams get what they want. We got a future, they want to win now.
Phil is going to light it up.

Dear Roger.
It appears you were not correct in saying the Leafs would not need to retain any salary.
Best of luck next time.

Good deal...Kapenen 1st rounder Harrington 2nd rounder...another 1st rounder and another 2nd rounder and no Kessel which is what the brass wanted.

I actually don't mind the deal. I was hoping to get one of two roster players as well, such as Sutter, to flip for more assets. That's the only thing I'm a little disappointed about. |

We traded Kessel for the same return as Franson and Santo, but we have to eat cap space. Horrible. |

True but the Leafs obviously want to move on. They must really feel like Kessel is not part of the solution of bringing a winner. Did they win the trade? Maybe not, but who cares? It's not about winning trades it's about making moves to get where you want to go. Wherever that is 4-5 yrs down the road, this gets you closer to that than retaining Phil does. - HonkyTonkMan
I would've waited a year or two. He's not keeping them out of the basement so I don't see what the rush was.
Oh well. |

They want the fans to accept a long rebuild but they're not willing to wait two months to get a better deal for Phil. Hmmm...

What did you think we were going to get? We got 2 top end prospects and a first rounder........ what exactly did you think a trade was going to consist of for a rebuilding team? - Smitty98
Those are not top end prospects. Good prospects, sure. But Pittsburgh has Maata and maybe Pouliot as top end prospects. They didn't even give us the best of their poopty prospect bunch. |
