that former first wasnt gonna be offered a contract next year...bust
retaining 1.2 is not bad when it was expected to eat 2+
also we didnt need to eat a poop contract, so we can still do that and acquire more assets with another team

- GardinerExpress

it was expected to eat 2M?!?!? where? when? no way we eat salary on a Kessel trade is what I read here. Phaneuf maybe, but not Kessel...

bottom line, if that exact trade has been proposed tou you here last week, everyone of you would have said no. don't kid yourself.

What's the overall assessment of the trade? What kind of grade would you give the leafs?

Despite the usual trolls spouting their revisionist history on here, this is very comparable to what most reasonable people were expecting for Kessel.

1st - check

High prospect, Kapanen - check

Roster player, Spaling - check (nothing special mind you, just a stop gap bottom 6, UFA next year)

Bad contract - retained an insignificant amount of salary instead. Cap will likely increase more than the retained salary every year and won't matter 3 years from now as Leafs finally start getting better.

Bonus mid prospect, Harrington - former 2nd rounder who has some

Bonus 3rd round pick

They got a good deal, especially when factoring in that they are now able to move forward with the much advertised desire for a culture change.

Now the Leafs just have to utilize these new assets properly and Phil can finally thrive with the elite centre he has needed and one of Crosby/Malkin gets the elite sniper they deserve.

Trolls will see Phil net 40 plus next year and diminish the return the Leafs got.

Everyone is happy, except of course a certain contingent of Leaf fans who seem to be the perpetually miserable emo kids of the NHL.

And a leafs 2nd

I'm glad Phil is gone..... But I don't love this deal

- The_Vark

Pretty much how I feel about it.

He had to go. I wish they could have got more, but they didn't.

I look at it like this, the closest recent trade comparison would be Seguin. Seguin is younger cheaper, better and a center. Toronto's return was very comparable, if not better.

You never "win" the trade when you give up a marquee player.

I'll be taking Kessel early in the draft next year.

The cynical Leaf fan like Zezel would say they just traded roster fillers

This makes me feel a little better but I would of liked to have gotten at least 1 exciting piece in the deal rather than a few decent ones.

With the Leafs getting smaller and smaller, you knew 'Biggs" had to go.

But I'm glad he sucked.

My only problem with the deal is the 1.2 cap hit we eat for 8 years.

So happy for Kessel. He deserves to be on a team that can compete. Watch him go beast mode in Pitts.

On the bright side, leafs got a 1st for him. That's all the leaf fans can ask for.

- bloatedmosquito

I feel the same way about Kassian. Gets to go to a team like the Habs who have a future. Should do well

I always thought we would get a 1st, good prospect (not elite), and a roster player.

We got that.

Now we also dealt a bag of kife (Biggs, Erixson, 1.2M in cap) and a late 2nd for a bonus decent prospect (2nd round) and a 3rd.

Kapanen was a top 10 talent that tumbled in the draft. 3g,2a,5pts in 7 AHL playoff games and he is the same age as Nylander
