Apparently the Leafs signed PA Parenteau for 1 year at 1.5M
Good roster filler and possible trade deadline bait for another pick or prospect. - BlueBallz

Holding on to him has nothing to do with 'fair market value'. The value is dictated by the market, ie. what teams are willing to give up.
And (frank) holding on to him. The team needed a culture change, Phil's entitled, rely on his natural gifts alone way of playing as the team's best player made that impossible. He needed to be moved. Before this year started. I'm 100% behind that decision. They'll now have 3 extra prospects (A recent 1st, a recent 2nd, and a future 1st) to develop from the ground up, the Babcock way. - 1979AD
if you have the mentality of "(frank) holding on to him" you're essentially guaranteeing that you're going to get fleeced.
i suspect leafs management thought exactly the way you did...which is why they got fleeced.

Well, the salary retain sucks.
But we have two firsts next year. At least. Hopefully they don't trade down again due to a lack of seconds. But two firsts is great as a starting point for next draft.
Really don't care much for Harrington, but between Marner, Bracco, Nylander, Kapanen and Nylanders twin sister, one is bound to be a home run. - systemtool
If I'm not mistaken the leafs will still have their 2nd rounder next year so probably going to be in the early 30's |

You guys signed Parenteau? Cool - HonkyTonkMan
He'll become a 2nd/3rd round pick when a contending team misses out on their first target and desperately needs to make their PP better. |

Just ask Pen15. Apparently he knows. - 1979AD
i have no clue. i just know they didn't have to trade him now. just because there are limited options today, doesn't mean there will be limited options forever.

I heard the Pens play by play guy on the Fan near the end of the season saying just this. - 1979AD
What an ass hat
An off year . finishes top in scoring still.
And he is declining... In the prime of his career.

Its most likely true... might not be much of a decline but i think his best years are behind him now... Shame he got hit with injuries and a shortened season. |

Why hold on to him, if likely only one team can trade for him. Kessel knew what he was doing

It's (frank)ing amazing that you can see into the future and know how these prospects and picks turn out 5 years from now to determine they got fleeced, but yes - needing to trade him and his NTC lessened the possible return. This is a necessary reality IMO, and I'm glad Leafs management shares my opinions for a change. |

These are the same people who said Ovechkin was done after his off year. The same that said Kessel was done after this season. |
