It just wasn't a good trade. They should have gotten more for Kessel.
Kessel will probably score 40 goals with Crosby.
Maybe the Pens will trade Malkin now??? - jimmc7722
Who had cap room for Kessel and then who did Kessel have on his list? That's why the return sucked. |

The other side also, is Pitt was not finding their winger they wanted. If the few available get moved around it's likely they would offer more when they missed out. Even if they didn't, there was no rush. I wanted Phil gone, but retaining salary was just awful, especially since trading Dion without retaining is far less likely... - aminnes
Agreed completely. i think kessel needed to go too, but they should've been more patient. they pulled the trigger less than 2hrs into free agency. of course there were limited options.
i get the feeling dion is staying... |

i don't think any of them will end up being top players in the nhl....i know that's an assumption but it's just an opinion. i think kapenan will be a good nhler, and the late 1st will probably be a servicable nhler...but neither would be enough for an elite goal scorer
the leafs needed one of matta or pouliot to make this deal fair. a true top prospect. and the 1st shouldn't have been lottery protected. - Pen15
Especially if they were to retain, a top prospect had to come back, they are paying Phil a top prospects entry level salary on top... |

Well this was the week/time to trade him. Shanny already stated that this was gonna happen and babcock had his input in it so what do you do. Get the best package available and move on. Only time will tell how these prospects work out. You gotta get rid of the fact we lost Seguin, Hamilton etc. For him. And this is what we got today. - LeafsFan23
question: do you think we could've gotten the a very similar package from pitt at the trade deadline? |

Thank you! A fair assessment not pretending to be factual. I'm also disappointed that with all the concessions they made (salary retained, conditional pick) they didn't get Pouliot. Adding to the prospect pool and being able to start a new era starting this season outweighs those negatives for me, though. |

A few months ago I was not 100% convinced Shanahan / Dubas / Hunter and friends would be doing thingss right.
Then the got Babcock.
Draft Marner + good draft in general.
Trade Kessel for a great return.
Sign UFAs Parenteau and Hunwick which are both good additions.
I'm very happy with this and confident going forward.
To do list:
- trade phaneuf
- trade lupul

A deal with Pitt and most other contending teams would be near impossible at the deadline because of the salary cap. |

i never tried to play off anything i was saying as fact.
that's where we differ...i don't think it would've been earth shattering if we held onto him until the trade deadline if it meant it increased our chances of getting a better haul. |
