To be honest, I've only ever reported a few posts (and only for hate speech), and the only time that I've PM'd Bruce about this thread was when a bunch of the Leafs "fans" (i.e. brainless trolls) came around to talk smack. - lumlums
Hey. No first names....and you know I'm (frank)ing with ya Doctor Lums. I haven't been asking for a doctor Lumlums t-shirt for the last few momths because I am a hater ya know. |

Giving McDoiler too much credit here.
Just getting a decent GM & very good coach usually gets peoples attention. That along with all the talent usually gets you a fair team. So good players should want to play for you.
Someone mentioned dynasties - is there a dynasty for number 1 draft picks?
You guys (once you get it together), are going to be great to look at & even better playing the Flames who have probably had the best draft free agency out of everyone.
Still back my boys over both of you though now we have 'Phil the dill' on board! |

Great story.
Always liked the young Oiler rebuild. Just as important, believed that the Oiler alumni were destroying the objectivity of any management responsiblity for making hard player personnel decisions. Interesting it appears that the Bruins are now being infected by a similar type of alumni disease.
More important than anything, especially the sequencing of events, the Oilers can put a team in place for a very long period of time that is somewhat protected from the devastating impact of cap excesses. If McDavid is your best player and destined to make top dollar under the cap (5 years now), every player personnel decision can be conditioned by that knowledge.
So, the acquisition, signing or trading of existing players truly becomes part of balanced strategy. Decisions can be made to fill team needs like size, defensive talent and goaltending rather than just wanting to get and keep a best player.
It must be very exciting to be an Oiler fan this morning. |

I wonder then if he takes the Crosby route and takes a little less to help keep the team intact (whatever it looks like 5 years from now)

That may depend on how he likes a Oiler town & how the press treat him. If the Oil don't win anything & the pressure builds on McDoiler, then things may turn sour & he leaves. So be real nice to him Oil fans & he 'might' stay. |

I pretty much assumed that if Edmonton won the lottery that Gary would be in that locked room yelling "RUN IT AGAIN!" until someone else won. - Matt_Henderson
I was saying to someone just yesterday that I FIRMLY believe the lottery used to be rigged. I hate the fact it was/is held behind closed doors and the Crosby thing was way too convenient to be completely random.
But this draft changed that. The chances of Edmonton winning for the 4th time must have been discussed by upper NHL brass and how it would be negatively perceived in the media and by fans.
And then they win it.
I now firmly believe the lottery is NOT rigged. |

The only “name” coach I can ever think of the Oilers hiring was the venerable Pat Quinn. - Matt_Henderson
What about Tom Renney Who was hire with Pat and took over the following year.
Would he fall under the "name" coach?

He had a good reputation as a hockey man, but I don't think he was even close to McLellan in terms of reputation as a Head Coach. |

Gregor really pointed to management and higher ups for being our major issue. Even without McDavid things were going to start getting better. McDavid just was the icing on the cake. |
