I posted over in Garf's "blog" too, but there's more action over here.
Toews scored 66pts in 80 games last year. ROR had 55 in 82. Toews is making $10,500,000 in 2016. ROR is making $7,500,000 in 2016 assuming both guys score the exact same amount of points as they did last year (not counting the unexpected). ROR is at about 83.3% of Toews point total but making only 71.4% of the money. Sounds like a deal to me.
And the flip side is true too Benn at $5.25 and Tavares at $5.5 obviously both those guys way out performed ROR this past year, but they signed their deals years ago, so again not really comparable. This is an apples to oranges deal. Just like every deal in the NHL. This deal was signed yesterday; comparing it to deals signed 2 years ago or 10 years ago doesn't make sense. Until Stamkos, Kesler, Tarasenko, Kopitar sign new deals there's no way to say whether it's good or bad. And even then each of those guys brings different things to their respective teams and have different expectations.
I'm not saying ROR is equal to any of the previously stated players just that most people seem to think this is the worst deal in the history of the NHL. You're worth exactly what someone is willing to pay. That's how the world works folks. - Wetbandit1
The deal isn't horrible, and it won't prevent us from eventually signing Eichel or Reinhart or Risto....however it absolutely will prevent us from having depth in the future.
Good luck resigning someone like Larsson or Pysyk if they exceed expectations and want 4 or 5 mil a year. We will be a very top heavy team that will rely solely on its star players to win a cup someday.
We will need to draft very well to fill out the roster |

seems to be the formula
5 or 6 high priced players
a few studs on bridge deals
vets on the cheap and entry level players to round out the roster

I would have signed Justin Williams, that was a good deal as was Green. |

So basically we will need to replicate Chicago of the last 5 years, I am okay with that model.

Yes. Problem is its easier said than done.
Murray has really decimated the prospect pool.
We have questions at defense, Left wing, right wing, and potentially goal

we also have girgens, eichel, risto, pysyk and probably reinhart with the big club
that plays a part as well
lots of good forwards still in the pipeline today, may change tomorrow
a few good d prospects in the pipeline, none would I would call high end
lots of goalies in pipeline, a few years away
I do like the cheap free agents he signed for depth in rochester though |

Were still looking at 3-4 drafts before were a legit contender. Think we'll be ok. But Murray does have to draft well, like all cup contenders do.

fasching, baptiste, bailey, karabacek, possler, and carrier all have potential to be second line wingers though |

Decimated? I don't agree with that but I guess we just differ. From now on we need to draft and develop or players well while picking up a few key older guys along the way. As long as we dont trade out first round picks for UFAs like Pittsburgh every year I like where we are sitting.

disagree
you do not bring in kane, and ror to wait to contend in 3 years
their goal should be to ice the best team possible and compete for the 8th spot, bring in a winning attitude to the locker room this year.
the following season they should be able to ice a team that has a realistic chance to advance past the first rd |

Between Fasching, Baptiste, and Bailey... I think one becomes a Lucic, D. Brown, Oshie, etc type tough 2 way guy who can play 1st line duties. |

I could be wrong but isn't Toews average $10.5 against the cap? - BigStew
Yes you are right.. I read something and got that figure from his last contract... But even so.. Lets go Devils, |

After Reinhart and Eichel are considered NHL'ers, our best prospect would be McCabe or Fasching.
That's a significant drop off from Zadorov, Grigorenko and Armia who were all top 50 prospects last year. |

you move out zadarov, armia, lemieux, gringo, compher, myers, 2 late first rd and pick 31 to get
ror, kane, bogo and a goalie who has only won in the ahl
that's 9 decent assets from the prospect pool to get what you expect to be 4 impact players
it did make the prospect pool take a big hit
not to mention whatever they could have received for staff at the deadline (a second rd pick?) |

Were still waiting on young guys to develop. In two years we arent competing for a cup. We still have plenty of question marks. Just cause we dont want to wait to contend doesnt mean we wont have to. |

oh I agree
I think we are thin on D for the big club and the only assets IMO we have to improve that is picks, prospects, foligno and larsson
there is a big hole in our top 4 d that needs to be fixed for the puck drops
and another goalie IMO is needed for the big club |

I thought Murray did well with the kids signed this week for Rochester. We still have Bailey, Baptiste, McCabe, Petersen, Ullmark, Fasching, Possler. Plus many liked the draft this year- Guhle, Borgen, Stephens and Estephan. Still plenty in the pipeline.

ROR is what you hope Grigo or Compher become.
Kane is what you hope Lemiuex or Armia become.
Bogo for Myers is a wash all things considering.
Only real value lost is Zadorov and the draft picks. I'll take that any day of the week for PROVEN NHL players 24 years of age or younger that have yet to hit their prime.
Take a look at the draft, how many players actually become NHL players. You'll be lucky to get 2 guys out of a single draft that contribute to the NHL. I'm fine with losing prospects for proven NHL guys. |

I agree but there now is a gap between eichel, reinhart, and risto from the players you listed
armia, gringo, lemieux, picks 21 and 31 would have all been better and closer to playing in the nhl then any of those players you listed though |

I like the kane/bogo trade and the ror trade (now that he is extended)
moving pick 21, I have to assume murray knows what he is doing
for the record I am sick of prospects, prospects, prospects
I am ready to see knowns on the ice weather the blue and gold come october

Lehner will get killed with the D we have currently. I hope Murray isn't done there. I'd like one more D man considering the cap space we have. |

Armia is bordering on bust.
Gringo is still an AHL player that is being forced to NHL or waiver claim.
Lemiuex is NOWHERE close to being more NHL ready compared to Bailey, Baptiste, McCabe, Ullmark, Fasching... I'd take all 4 over Lemiuex.
The picks... nowhere close to being NHL ready compared to the prospects in the system for a couple years.
Youre wrong. |
