1. He loves the idea of playing with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin
2. He likes the style of play that Mike Johnston utilizes
3. The team is in a win now mode
4. He liked using the Penguins while playing PlayStation

Poor guy... he doesn't know injuries are a bit less on them video games, or at least reasonable injuries. Pretty sure NHL 2016 doesn't have a cancer, lupis, and plague disease setting.

My hope is that the guy can become another Hornqvist type player. However, those are lofty expectations and I am expecting more of a bottom 6 player.

Pens still have lots of work to be done to fill the team out. Anyone else surprised how long it's taking some of these UFAs to sign?

Sergei Plotnikov's one-year ELC with #Pens carries a $3.78M cap hit (including $2.85M in potential performance bonuses). RFA next summer.

It's not that his English is bad, it's that whatever was used to translate didn't do a very good job. Although his English is probably still bad

Those performance bonuses don't hit until next year though. I have no problem with performance bonuses built into contracts. Sutter at the very least needs to be moved to save money. Kunitz is another one that should be looked at. Scuderi would be a dream, but doubt it'll happen.

Hopefully Cap Friendly will have them, once they update his contract... im thinking games played, points etc...

but I think until it is paid out, the cap hit remains at that $3.78M and that is the number the team has to work around... but if he doesnt hit those bonuses then of course his cap hit is different

I was almost certain those bonuses don't affect until next season, and this year we get just the base value. Wasn't that how it went with Iginla on his deal with Boston? He hammered them the year after he played there.

They will count against the cap next season. For this season, he is a $945k player on an ELC.

Just as an FYI, I believe the rule is as follows:

- The full amount ($3.78M?) will count against this years cap.
- However, you can exceed the cap by a certain percentage of bonuses (can't remember the specific percentage)
- If the bonuses are fulfilled, then the amount you exceeded the cap by in terms of bonuses count against next year's cap.

So, if they don't exceed the cap this year, regardless of the amount of bonuses he hits, it doesn't count against next year's cap. It's only if they exceed the cap by the bonus amounts AND the bonuses are fulfilled causing them to actually exceed the cap, then that amount is pushed to next year.

Also this would be for all bonuses, not just his (any other ELCs, or veterans with bonus-laden contracts).

Could be wrong though, haven't checked this stuff out for the new CBA.

That's a nice cap hit, should that have gone to a top 4 defenseman instead?
Especially after the Kessel trade.

per CBA
4.0 Player Bonuses
Bonuses are monetary amounts given to a player either in addition to their salary cap hit, or included as part of their salary cap hit.

Not all players are eligible to receive bonuses. In order to receive a bonus as part of the player's contract, they must meet one of the following criteria:

Players on entry level contracts,
veterans who have played over 400 games,
players have who signed a one year contracts and are over 35 years old
players who have spent > 100 days on the IR
Depending on the teams cap situation, a player's bonus can count against the current year cap, or against the following seasons cap in the form of 'Carryover Bonus Overages'.

11.0 Entry Level Contract
Players who qualify in the entry-level system, also known as "Group 1" players, must sign contracts with strict limits on term and compensation.

Players younger than 25 as of Sept. 15 in the calendar year their first NHL contract is signed are subject to the terms of Article 9 of the CBA and must sign an entry-level contract. This means the amount of salary and team-paid performance bonuses is capped, depending on his draft year or the year he signs. The length of entry level contract is also based on the player's age.

All entry level contracts are two-way contracts and can be extended by as many as two seasons with the maximum allowable salaries for players selected in each entry draft up until 2022 is $925,000.

Entry level contracts can contain two types of bonuses: signing bonuses and performance bonuses.

SIGNING BONUSES cannot exceed 10 percent of the contract's total compensation & paid out annually.
PERFORMANCE BONUSES cannot exceed $2,850,000.
Performance bonuses can be broken up into 2 categories:

SCHEDULE A BONUSES cannot exceed $212,500 per individual bonus & $850,000 in aggregate.
SCHEDULE B BONUSES are paid by the league & are not captured within the actual entry-level contract signed by the player, & do not count against the team's salary cap.
