“He's a big guy, a big, strong winger, a power forward,” Dixon said. “I think he's built for the game in North America. I think it's a great find for the Penguins. I think he's a guy that's going to come in and no one's going to know that much about him and he's going to be really good.”

“He's a tough kid,” Dixon said. “He's a laid-back guy off the ice, but when he plays, he's intense. He doesn't mind dropping the gloves. You'll see when he gets over there. He doesn't play the old stereotypical Russian game. He goes to the net hard.”

According to scouting reports, Plotnikov also has a good shot and keen offensive instincts. He is not known to be a good skater.

“I've never seen him on the small ice, but I think that might suit his game a little better,” Dixon said. “Sometimes with guys that big, you might say, ‘Oh, he doesn't look too fast,' but all of a sudden, he's going around guys. He's a lot faster than he looks.”

Doesn't sound like a 4th liner to me.

And if he's top six, that means he beat out Kunitz, Dupuis and Bennett for the spot. If that's "trouble," hook me up with some more.

I hope we're not done signing. I think we need 1 or 2 more depth guys. Semin will be signed by wednesday I'm sure, and hopefully by us.

What's Plotnikov's cap hit afterall? $3.78M? Would rather have him or Joel Ward?

The only thing that sucks is that Tikhonov signed for $1.1M We should've signed him.

No cap space left. Still have 3 to sign & with Plots bonuses it pushes us to the limit - unless they carry those bonuses over if that's how it works. If we want another salary on board pretty sure we have to trade 1 out.

Plotnikov will count $925k on this year's cap hit plus his bonuses. However, if the bonuses put the Pens over the cap, that amount will be carried over into next season. It's unlikely he will be hitting his bonuses so they won't be leaving space for that (or shouldn't be). IOT sign anymore players of significance, someone on roster is going to have to be moved out.

Ya gotta read and understand the bonuses... Expect 1.725M as his cap hit.

Also.. Tikhonov appears to have bonuses as well in his deal.

I find it very motivating. Had Tikhonov signed with us we could've possibly have to pay Big money to both russians had they played with Geno

Yep, we'd have an entire line that needs their own coach speaking Russian

I don't understand why people keep pushing Semin.

Aside from all the reasons not to sign him that aren't "personal," he stiffed Rutherford by refusing to compete on a $7 mil a year contract Rutherford gave him, he's put down Crosby in print, and he's aligned with Geno's Russian nemesis Ovechkin.

It just makes no sense, while discounting all the hockey-related reasons why not to sign him.

Seeing as no one else has signed him yet... and he is at least smart enough to not want to go to the KHL... I see him at 1.5 mil, for an extreme upside potential, and now at a cost low enough you can't not risk it.

Also, despite stiffing the "current" Carolina GM... Rutherford is the one who gave him the big contract, so possibly hes holding out for JR to make the call to him again. If we are the only team he'll go to, that drives down his own price more.

If his cost is now slashed to 1.5, you wouldn't want a 1-2 year deal on him?

Certainly wouldnt mind it at that price. Sucks he is a RH-RW though. And those top 6 spots are taken. If he could play on a third line, it would fit into the "4 scoring lines" model....but then again, Semin and Sutter just doesnt sound too appealing.

I wouldn't take him on for league minimum. No one wants a quitter.

If he's your 2nd line winger you guys are in trouble. Big trouble.
- AdamFrench

Did you notice the other 5 guys in the top 6? We could have Colton Orr playing there and still be just fine. It's probably going to be Beau Bennet though. I stand alone in that thought but I think he's busting his butt right now and will have a great training camp. The poor kid is due for a break this season.

agree about BB probably working hard and trying to be healthy, but i dont see him on the 2nd line unless he has a great camp and beginning season. I see plot staying there until he isnt producing or at least helping out. Kuni will slot in if need be as of now a 3rd line of kuni sutter bennett has the grit, defenseiveness and offensiveness of a decent 3rd line

Hoping for Fehr. Wonder why he hasn't signed yet. Would be an amazing 4th line center who gives JR flexibility with Sutter

My problem is, if the 3rd line doesn't produce...you have over 10 Mil tied up in your 3rd line. That seems like a lot, so unless you get 15-20 goals and around 50 points out of them, its an overpayment and bad cap management. I still think tere will be a trade to be made at some point with either Kunitz or Sutter. You just can't let Sutter walk for nothing at the end of the year, but you can't resign him to over 4 mil a year...and I am sure he will want 5-6, seeing what other players have gotten.

Tbh I think Sutter is getting $4M per at most. Only a crazy GM will give him more money. He's a 3rd line C at best.

We all know what he is worth, doesn't me thats what he will get. I have a feeling he will get at least 5 mil a year from someone on the open market. I just can't justify spending 4-5 mil on a 3rd line center, seeing what is tied up in the big 5 now.
