Ok I'll bite. Don't expect a response, but that's ok. Todd or James, if ROR is worth the money would Derek Stepan be worth a similar or the exact same contact?

I'm a big ROR fan so while I don't think his last couple seasons really earned him this contract, I think he will be worth every penny going forward. But it's a risk and he might scrub it up so we'll see.

After buffalo dealt what they did for him, they had to sign him to a deal. People might say he's overpaid by 1.5-2M but that's better than dealing those assets and having him walk for nothing.

If he can score the clutch goals consistently in the regular season and lead them into the playoffs in years 3-7 then yes it's worth it

Tanner thinks the cap is going to go up huge due to expansion. Not exactly the guy you want to use as an opinion of value.

The way its looking the cap will be flat for next year like this year. I believe the cap went up because of the players enacting the 5 percent esculater clause. I could be wrong though. The canadien dollar isn't going to improve over the next year or so.

This is the modern NHL, mediocre players now get more than top players still in their prime. Current top players are cashing in huge (see PK Subban). This is just inflation actualized on a salary cap. Given that, ROR at this point is probably worth the contract; if he turn into a bust though the contract structure is going to hurt Buffalo a lot.

The Avs are for sure the worst run team in the league .I really have seen little to no direction from them for years now , and this non signing is just a mirror to how little they understand talent .Even that of what they already possess .If that is all Oreilly wanted and you balked? Your orginization is screwed.

Un (frank)ing believable

Suck for years, get awesome draft picks and prospects, and the first thing you do... Set yourself up for cap hell.

Murray is such an arrogant clown. His ego will destroy Buffalo

The Canadian Dollar is a petro currency. When the price of Oil is up, so goes the Canadian Dollar. Other reasons for the lower Canadian Dollar is the upcoming Federal Election in the fall. Canadian's will go to the polls and the way the indicators are pointing, will probably be looking at a minority government. Right now, the NDP(Labour, or socialists) have moved ahead of the Liberal Party of Canada. They are neck and neck with the governing Conservatives. Unfortunately, a close vote will cause a minority government and the Liberals will side with the NDP to turf the ruling Conservative Party, of Steven Harper.

What this will cause is an issue in the stock market. The Conservatives have run a decent fiscal ship, the last few years, since the Stock Market crash of 7 years ago. The idea of a Socialist government coming to power and opening up the spending taps, will drive down the value of the currency. What does this mean to the Canadian teams and their contribution to the salary cap? Less revenue and possibly teams being in financial trouble, with players being paid in U.S. dollars. There could even be cap regression, if the dollar falls under 80 cents, as compared to the U.S. dollar. Best hope for a Conservative rebound and keep the value of the Canadian dollar above the 80 cent demarcation line.

Wow...are you two guys paid to write this tripe? He's worth it because the salary cap is going up and he's 3m less than Toews? Most of the other reasons you cite are applicable to more players than the overall NHL cap would fit.

My favorite is that he is 24 and he has his best hockey ahead of him. Uh....that would pretty much apply to most players. If you guys can't admit he was at least slightly overpaid, you shouldn't be writing about NHL financial matters.

Wow, just wow...

Regier already did that. Murray is a god send. Those prospects, over half of them won't pan out, he did the right thing.

Buffalo is going to come up to Montreal this season and show competitive hockey. It's a win for everyone.

Not really...ROR had 55 points last season. While Soder had 44 and comeau had 31 in only 61 games played. I'll take depth and flexibility all day long. ROR put up his career high of 64 points playing on the WING which people seem to not understand. (Riding shotgun with dutchy) He's a complimentary player, not the straw that stirs the drink. While ROR is really good in all areas of the ice and I respect his game, he is not an elite talent. Think Ryan Callahan.

daddy warbucks think so and that is all that matters.all these cry baby's that are up against the cap are upset because their in a pickle and their gm's have to be creative to stay below the cap, and their team has to sign their young stars and can't offer enough because 3 players take up half their cap. boohoo boohoo

Well that's what happens when you get moved to a team needing to reach the salary floor. As of now this signing is fine, it just becomes tricky when you need to sign the rest of Eichel, Reinhart, Girgensons, Ristolainen etc. Otherwise, steal of a signing (just because ROR is a beast).
