He was referring to Leon, Griffin, and Nurse.
Mcdavid isn't eligible for the A anyway. He's a lock for NHL duty. - ystoil
(frank) it, lets send him back to junior. Aim for a couple hundred points maybe even three hundred |

The funny thing is, that's a realistic target. |

If Darnell is 100% ready to take top line minutes, then sure keep him up, but I think he will get even better with at least a half a season in the AHL as their number one. Same with drasaitl. The defense is strong enough as it is that we have the luxury to not rush him, and our center depth means drasaitl has a chance to refine how he plays without the pressure of having to produce, might even give them a chance to try him at wing. Unless those two have proven without a shadow of a doubt that they are ready, not just to make the team, but to fullfil the role that their potential has shown, I say to Bakersfield with them. - vertigo2002 We have too many D's and C's right now anyway, some that we cant even trade. Sure we could trade Nikitin and Ferrence but we would obviously lose those deals right now. Might as well play them this year while the team takes shape and let Nurse Griffin and Leon marinate in the AHL until we are 100% sure that they are NHL ready. I still believe that 41 games in the AHL is the minimum requirement for assessing if a player is truly ready to make the jump, but a year would be better. Hey, maybe Ferrence and Nikitin will look better under MacLellan and we can get a better trade deadline return. This way we step into the new building 2 years from now with three plug and play players as immediate additions to the top half of the roster who have been brought along properly while removing the dead weight at the bottom. I think if we can keep those three in the AHL next year and make it halfway to the playoffs, then then following year that should put us over the top and maybe the first season in the new building will be a playoff year. |

be nice to get a Gio type of player for Nurse to partner with. Made Brodie a good player out of Junior to a stud...
Couple more years boys and both our teams will be relevant and the talk of the league and we can start talking poop with each other in the real world not just the hopeful one...

interesting that cody franson is still available.
If chia can dump nikitin and ference to teams that need cap space.....coyotes, getting him for 3.5-4.5 mill for 2-3 years, that would shore up our top 4.
he is 6'5'', right handed, and proven.
As for Schultz.....should we try trade him or give him another year?
Sekera
Klefbom
Franson
Reinhart
Fayne
Gryba
Not bad, but from what I've seen at orientation, nurse is more than ready... he is a pure beast, wouldn't be surprised if he makes the roster. |

At this point I'd start the D as
Sekera Fayne
Klefbom Nikitin/Ference
Gryba Schultz
Nurse and Reinhart start in the AHL.
I think Nikitin deserves a chance to recover from last year. If he can he's a legit top 4 d. If not, Schultz and Ference cover the 2R and 3R d spots. If they can't be relied on, bring Nurse or Griff up.
I really think Jultz would thrive on 13-14 mins of EP and 2nd PP time. 3rd pairing means he'll get easier matchups to skate around and he can still sneak in backdoor on the PP. He can't shoot from the point, so let's not rely or expect that. |

I'm down with getting Franson but I think he wants too much. If he'd take 4.5 mil, can we bury Nikitin in the minors? |

We can do that.
As for nurse and reinhart one more year in ahl would do good, like that option. |

Now that is solid and once nurse makes the giant leap, as well as reinhart, we will have a great defence. |

Only thing is we would want to sign Franson for short term- it is unlikely we would need him after 2 years... I think thats the pickle... No one wants to give him the $$ or term he thought he could command... |

I'd Expect Expect the Oilers to file for arbitration on Schultz today. That will trigger buyout window for them....

ference would be extremely tough to move. if we move one of him or nikitin, itll be to save cap to sign Schultz, pitlick etc. as we only have like 7 mil left at the moment. not to use that same money and then some to overpay for an overrated franson.
its no surprise hes still out there with the apparent asking price. I believe his play in Nashville reminded most of the gm's that may have overpaid for his services what he really brings. and it isn't that much. |

I get why people are excited about Connor (how can you not be) but at the end of a day he cant win us a cup alone...if you go back in history any "genertaional" talent didnt win a cup alone
Gretz had Mess and Kurri ect ect ect
Mario had Jagr and Francis ect ect ect
Crosby had Malkin and Kunitz ect ect
I guess thats why im more excited about the development of the rest of the team as opposed to just Connor coz that is what will win us a cup down the road - RatedR80
I think nurse turning into what we hope might actually do more for this organization than mcdavid doing the same.
mcdavid will probably be a special player and I aint discounting his massive potential. but I believe we are far more desperate for a true 1 defender more than a 1c. in fact, I believe we already have 1 that's well on his way. and another that might also have that upside.
but we only have 1 guy with nurses potential on the backend |

Great write up BTW. Nurse is going to be a beast.
This fundamental belief that "skilled" players don't have to do the dirty work is where Edmonton and other teams have failed to realize what it takes to make it into the playoffs.
This attitude is toxic in today's NHL. Toews, Doughty, Gaborik and Kane will do anything to win.
In the minors or in junior the really skilled players don't need the full package but that's where the problem comes when they get into the NHL. Even your best players need to get in those shooting lanes to take away scoring opportunities. It may not be sexy, it may cause pain and on occasion it may cause an injury but if these players are not expected to be responsible defensively the ultimate quest of a Stanley Cup is a dream.
Just look to Ovie and the Capitals. They have been good in the regular season but until Arnott got in there there was no sacrificing going on there. After Arnott Ovie has dedicated himself to becoming a better player defensively and challenges everybody on the team so the team can take the next step. I think we can all agree the Caps are much more formidable today than they were when they won the conference. - Kraqule
I agree but it is a whole different game in the NHL and especially in a summer scrimmage. If I was the coaching staff I would have told McDavid directly to not block shots at this point. Save that practice for preseason play at least. No need to risk injury during summer camp. I don't think anyone will know the full extent of McDavid's ability until he actually starts playing in regular season games. Even then it might take him time to get his bearings. Leon has proved himself as a two way player and so has RNH to some degree. McDavid might not get as much defensive zone starts because of this but he definitely has a strong level of compete in him. I have no doubt he will do what needs to be done to win.

You have like 2. Landers potential applies to all positions, including that of the 1D |
