Wow. Ryan O'Reilly is now making the same $$ as Tarsenko. |

Bill, do you see any way Pettersson ever makes an NHL roster aside from exhibitions? I admire the guy's work ethic, but he seems like he just has too many obstacles to overcome. - jmatchett383
Odds are against him, but I'd love to see it.

Seems to me Voracek can get at least 8.5/per especially if it's less than that term.
I'd be happy with anything under 9 |

In order of best-to-worst and what I see them as:
Forwards:
Laughton (top-9 winger/center)
Konecny (top-9 winger/center)
Lindblom (top-9 winger)
Leier (bottom-9 winger)
Fazleev (bottom-9 winger)
Defense:
Sanheim (top pair all-minutes defenseman)
Provorov (top pair all-minutes defenseman)
Morin (2nd pair shutdown man)
Ghost (bottom pair PP specialist)
Hagg (bottom pair)
Goal:
Stolarz (solid backup/fringe starter)
I didn't list Aube-Kubel because I think he's going to sink or swim in a top-6 role and may fall into an Akeson type of role where he can't ever produce enough of a positive goal differential to justify a roster spot.
Now, this is based on very little solid evidence more than my gut feelings, and is subject to change at a moment's notice. But it at leats gives me some hope. - jmatchett383
Aube-Kubel has one huge advantage over Akeson -- NAK is plus-skater whereas Akeson is both undersized and knocked for having "AHL feet".

Love Tarasenko. If he can get 7.5 per as a RFA, I'm scared to see what the Flyers are going to have to give Jake to keep him from UFA. I still don't want to give him more than Claude even though Claude signed his extension 2 years ago. |

Based on some of these contracts, I foresee Jake getting $64MM / 8 years ($8MM AAV). I think Giroux should be the highest paid on the team as he is the best player. |

The Flyers may be able to keep Voracek's cap hit down a bit by front loading the contract, which increases the real value to the player. Tarasenko's breakdown is a little strange:
$8, $8, $7, $7, $9.5, $5.5, $9.5 $5
The Flyers could do something like this for Jake: 8 years, $8 million AAV.
16-17 $11m
17-18 $10m
18-19 $10m
19-20 $9m
20-21 $7m
21-22 $6m
22-23 $5.5m
23-24 $5.5m

I wonder what guys might come in on a player tryout this year? I wouldn't be against maybe seeing what Kostitsyn might be able to do. |

I thought the league included a season to season limit for variance in contract dollars? Did that not go through? |

It did, which is why Talbot's original deal was nixed. But that was before the 12/13 lockout and new CBA, so I'm not sure. But yeah, I think it's supposed to be something like 75% of the max. annual value (in this case, $7.125M) is the minimum annual value.
Edit: 35 per cent per year but a minimum of going no lower than 50 per cent of the highest year.
$8, $8, $7, $7, $9.5, $5.5, $9.5 $5
This is a 72% increase. So....who knows. |

They do seem to violate the 35% rule. Here is the source of the yearly breakdown.

#stlblues Sign Tarasenko to 8 yr deal....breakdown as follows $8, $8, $7, $7, $9.5, $5.5, $9.5 $5 |

I thought the same thing about both Kostitsyn brothers. I'd rather go after sergie since he's younger, but then again, we don't have any pressing need to "go after" anyone. Alex radulov could be an overseas option too.

So the 35% variance rule only applies to contracts where the first half of the contract is worth more than the second. I think the eight year should be $5.5m, which would make the deal worth $30m in the first four years, and $30m in the second four years.
From NHL_NHLPA_Proposed_CBA_-_Summary_of_Terms_FINAL_-_Jan._12,_2013%20(1).pdf
For multi-year SPCs that are “Front-Loaded Contracts,” i.e., where the average of the Player Salary
and Bonuses in the first one-half of the contract is greater than the AA over the full term of the SPC:
a) Year-to-year variability in compensation (each year’s Salary and Bonuses) will be limited to
35% of the compensation (Salary and Bonuses) in the first year of the SPC. For example,
if a Player earns $10 million in compensation (Salary and Bonuses) in Year 1 of his SPC,
his compensation (Salary and Bonuses) cannot increase or decrease by more than $3.5
million in any subsequent year of the SPC.
b) The lowest year’s compensation (Salary and Bonuses) cannot be less than 50% of the
highest year’s compensation (Salary and Bonuses) of the SPC. For example, if in the
highest year’s compensation (Salary and Bonuses) of a Player’s SPC, he earns $10 million
in total compensation (Salary and Bonuses), he may never earn less than $5 million in any
single year during the term of his SPC.
For all other multi-year |
