I'll confess I didn't know much of anything about Giroux when they drafted him.
I remember there was pre-draft hype about the Flyers taking a player who grew up in New Jersey named Bobby Sanguinetti. When the Rangers took him the pick before the Flyers, I didn't have a clue who they were going to take.
After he was drafted, I looked up Giroux's junior numbers at the time, and he was a pretty prolific scorer in his draft year and scored at a similar clip the following year (finished top 5 in the QMJHL, I believe), so I think he was expected to score a little bit when he turned pro. - johndewar
Interesting. Can you think of some slightly younger players who followed a similar path from unheralded late first/early second round pick to dominant NHL point producer? Kinda want to know what to look for in this upcoming season with Konecny. Maybe Tarasenko or Saad. Also I think one of the triplets (Kucherov) was a second round pick. |

He had another monster jr year after he was drafted, but what really got my notice was the 51 points he put up in 19 games in the QMJHL playoffs. Unreal numbers against the stiffest competition. - MBFlyerfan
He had two big JR runs after he was drafted but yeah, everyone noticed after he tore up the QMJHL playoffs.
For me, and I'd think most, the 2010 playoff run was his coming out party. At that point it was hard for anyone to deny that he was a rising star in the league. |

Even more remarkable was that out of those 51 points, only one goal was a pp goal and he had 3 shorties.

Those guys aren't dominant yet and Tarasenko went fairly early. Probably the only reason he went in the middle of the first was the fear of the KHL contracts at the time. They were throwing around huge money.
You aren't going to find a commensurate forward to Giroux in any recent draft. You're probably going to have to go back a bit to find a forward that dominates and didn't go top 10-15. |

Looking up some stats and noticed there are only 5 active players with over 1000 pts now that St. Louis retired. You have to wonder if 1000 career points might become a huge milestone again like it was prior to the 80s. |

Yeah I know. I was reaching. Maybe Tyler Johnson but he went undrafted. Speaking to that point, I would imagine you would agree that the drafting/development process in hockey most closely resembles the MLB. In football there is no minor league system and in the NBA no one who will ever become a superstar gets even a sniff of a D-League arena. How come, then, we see such a small percentage of late round impact players in the NHL but so many in the MLB? Both have systems in place for upwards of 4 years of development before major league action. Is it simply inherent differences in the sport? A tendency to rush players to the NHL so those with slower development curves get left in the dust? I think more NHL teams would be foolish to not start adapting more of the Red Wings model. No other teams has the same level of contributors from the later rounds. |

Could be. But you know the NHL loves offense. If point totals don't start to top out in the 100s again they change the goal size or do some other gimmicky thing to increase scoring. I'll be interested to see what impact the 3V3 OT has on superstar scoring rates, if any. Might see a little bump. |

I don't like rubbery chewy candies like Twizzlers/Swedish Fish. Kit Kats and Reese's Cups/Pieces are where it's at.
