If they sign Franson they've at least got a capable top pairing out of Sekera-Franson. I though trading Marincin was idiotic given the return they got. - jfkst1
cody franson a capable top pairing defender?! in what world? he wasn't even top pairing on Toronto and they had a terrible defence. ask Nashville what they thought of him when they weren't even dressing him in the playoffs. a guy gets a few points and people create some sort of myth.
there's a reason its june 10th and he hasn't been signed for the money hes apparently been asking.
Oscar klefbom is a safer option on our top pair as hes a far better two way defender. and as hes just a kid. and that comment aint about giving him huge props, its about tempering the narrative on what franson really is.
as far as marincin; again, people remember 30 decent games two years ago and think hes some sort of bluechipper. he aint. hes nothing but unrealized potential.
rather have 3rd pairing gryba on this young defence as at least we know what we're getting. an actual nhl defencemen. even if it is a 3rd pairing plug that's physical |

They will be close but not because of the moves PC has made.
McLellan is the biggest difference and he was brought in by Nicholson and Mact.
Sekera is an upgrade on Petry. Talbot we will have to wait and see. The rest has only been tinkering.
Hope the natural progression of guys does the rest. - Flameout
MacT started talks, but PC closed the deal. For all we know the change in management was his tipping point for signing here |

I didn't like that deal at all. Reinhart was overtaken in the Isles depth chart by 2 other D. We have to hope that the change to the Oil will help him in his development but we still gave up too much for him. - haymac
He was pushed down the depth chart by Leddy and Boychuck, they don't sign those players and he starts the year with the Islanders |

Maybe. Or maybe not? Maybe coaching Hall and Ebs was his tipping point. Maybe winning the draft lotto was the tipping point?
There are a dozen factors. Just saying PC getting the credit is over done. There were many forces at work. |

All I am saying is don't be upset if he only bits 60-70 points (which is very good for a rook) people need to let the kid breath. - Sirmerksalot
absolutely.
anyone disappointed in cconnor if he 'only' rings up 70 points really doesn't have a grasp of how tough the nhl is these days.
ill be very very satisfied with anything 60 and over.
over 70 as a rook? effin fantastic |

Honestly, he hasn't done that much. Not to mention he actually doesn't play the games. All PC has done that wasn't gifted to him (McDavid) is:
Replace Petry with Sekera
Swap Marincin for Gryba (6th dman)
Replace 4th Line Centres
Acquire a 3LW
Acquire another promising backup
Honestly alot of the heavy lifting for this team has been done by MacT, his biggest mistake in my opinion was the hiring of Eakins I really think that move set us back. - rathagor
good post
our defence really isn't much better unless Schultz and klefbom take big steps forward.
I think even if nurse and reinhart make the squad (griffin prob will) id be surprised if they make any huge impact.
I like pc, and its exciting to have someone with a ring as our gm, but hes done nothing that has shaken the foundations of the organization.
the draft pick he inherited has though |

we also got a shot if we can get hot outta the gates and give hall, ebs and nuge some real confidence quickly into the season.
sputter outta the gates and id bet theyre fragile after losing for so long |

Oh I might have misunderstood..
I thought you meant he is going to get 100+ points in his rookie season.
I don't doubt at all he is going to start getting 100+ points in his career, just not for a few years. - Sirmerksalot
No you didn't misunderstand I meant rookie season. He will see 160 in his career also I do agree there has been point drops over the years that's why no matter how good a person is they will never ever come close to Wayne's point totals 92 goals 200+ point season. |

Was he gm when he signed the contract? Yes.
Was he gm when talks started? No.
There are many factors. Are you saying PC is the sole reason McLellan agreed to coach the Oilers? |

I think people's expectations for points of players are generally too high. Some people expect guys getting third line time get like 40+ points when realistically they only get 30 - 40.
Just look at Tampa this past season, they were the highest scoring team with 259 goals. Their top scorers (Stamkos and Johnson) had all of 72 points. Their 7th highest scoring forward had 38 points.
Expectations should be lowered. |

Spector was talking about it almost from the day after McLellan was let go. And PC even admitted he barely knew McLellan at all prior to talking to him in Prague. |

Pretend last year didn't happen. Now look at every other year. Last years point totals just dropped and it wasn't gradual. if you go back and look at all five years before that its pretty close to the same. So no expectations for the future of the NHL scoring totals should be passed off based on last year. |

Gotta think rationally here..
Game has changed, 100 point seasons will be extremely rare soon enough. Only the elite of the elite will get there. |

Here is the information for the last couple years (I excluded the lockout year) top scoring team:
2013-14 - Anahiem - 263 goals
Top scorer - Getzlaf - 87 points
Points by Forward: 87, 82, 49, 43, 42, 32, 31
2011-12 - Pittsburgh - 273 goals
Top scorer - Malkin - 109 points
Points by Forward: 109, 81, 61, 59, 50, 48, 38
2010-11 - Vancouver - 258 goals
Top scorer - D.Sedin - 109 points
Points by Forward: 104, 94, 73, 50, 48, 39, 30
If we are expecting McDavid to get 2nd line time I think it's realistic to expect 40+ points however since we likely won't be the top scoring team this year I wouldn't expect more than 50. If McDavid takes over as the #1 center that may change. And again anybody on the third line expect them to get less than 40 points. |
