But he didn't. Hey listen I know it's bad and doesn't look good for him or the Sabres, I would just prefer to see how this plays out and reserve judgement.
Besides, he could have been driving less than 20mph there when he hit the building. - mhp
Naturally. I think the real problem here that will complicate things is that he left the scene (which by itself can carry up to five years in jail)... that's where the complications will come in. I guess we'll find out more on August 20th... |

I agree, leaving the scene was not smart at all. That part is disturbing, I will admit. |

Without that it would be a fine, maybe a small suspension plus a driving ban, and then on with life.
Now they could choose to make an example of him. |

you expect poor choices from a 21 year old living paycheck to paycheck
not this from a multi millionaire - homiedclown
Actually, I expect poor choices from exactly this kind of person.
These are not exactly geniuses.
Then again, I know some incredibly intelligent people who have done some of the dumbest things I have ever seen. |

Doing some back reading here ya think he murdered someone. - mhp
Kind of odd how you worded that one. How many times have we heard drunk driver hits, kills someone....
He left the scene of the accident. and was charged with DUI. Innocent until proven guitly. but nothing looks good right now. |

Failure to remain can result in charges under the criminal code or under the highway traffic act. News reports say the latter which is far less serious. |

I know back in the late 70's when I was a young pup I did some dumb things, including driving home from the bar after a few too many. - mhp
I agree... times have changed a bit.
The cops would pull us over and just make somebody else drive... or leave the car there and call us a cab or give us a ride home.
You don't see that now... |

Agreed. I spend most of my time around pretty smart people in the academic world... and some of the dumb poop I have seen and heard is truly (frank)ing mind-blasting |

And MacTavish.
I seriously don't know how they managed to iron those situations out (well, one has to assume that money helps)... - lumlums
Having a team of lawyers working for your company with international visa expertise probably helps.
Whenever I have to go into Canada for work (which is rare) I have to present documents outlining why I should be approved for a temporary work visa, which my company's legal department has on file ready to go.
He should be both embarrassed and grateful it wasn't much, much worse - but I don't think he'll have too much trouble at the border going forward. |

I haven't seen any news reports tbh, but I think that it's at the point that they could charge him under the criminal code. We'll find out August 20th which one they choose... |

It was 4 in the morning... nobody around, so they thought they could get home without anybody seeing them...
I could just imagine that conversation between him and his buddy... |

If Heatley can smooth over border crossings, then I'm sure that he will be able to.
Funny you mention visas, I have the distinct pleasure of waking up at 3.30am tomorrow ( ) so that I can drive down to Calgary and get my US visa... |

Yeah, the plastic surgery is keeping her rolling along.
They'll have to put her in a recycling bin in the end, though. |

Cheers, I'm looking forward to it! A two year research position in California is certainly not the worst thing i can think of
And to be honest, with the exception of the first time at Newark airport (long story), I've always found US customs and associated folks to be pretty decent. |

Poor guys were probably drinking all day and night... it is 4am in the morning.
The town they were in only had 4500 people living in it... so you know Tim Hortons is the only 24 hour store open...lol.
They were probably hungry, and decide to make a quick trip for some grub...lol.
I'm sure the old pick up truck doesn't react as quickly turning... so he probably missed his turn and hit the building pulling in...
Looked around... nobody was there... so thought they better get out of there quickly!!!
Only to have the truck break down on the way home... |
