I wonder if anyone will ever follow the 'vancouver model' as a way to build a franchise?

I don't want them to make the playoffs. No benefit to anyone other than the owner and I don't give a poop about the owner.

We have some good prospects but nothing to build a team around (not yet anyway). If the team was able to get a top three pick in the next couple of drafts then they might be able to find that 'cornerstone' prospect.

I know a lot of folks on here disagree with my approach but I want this team to get that damn cup. The drought is starting to become ridiculous.

Do I want the team to win the cup sure, but as long as I'm being entertained and feel like the team has a chance for the playoffs I'm happy. It is better than watching a poopty team for 5+ years with no guarantee of a cup team either.

Put it this way, over the last 10 years would you of rather followed the Canucks or the Canes?

Carolina has a cup in 2006 but only made the playoffs one other time during that time. They have picked 3 times in the bottom 5, 5 in the bottom 10 and 8 in the bottom 15 and they certainly are not looking like they are ready to turn the corner.

But Cooper is a playoff genius? Which cup did he win, I forget?

I like them being in the playoffs more than missing. But don't like the first round sweeps either. That being said, ignoring what you and I want and like, do you think this team is still a playoff team from year to year?

As long as the Sedins are here, there is a good chance they are a playoff team. What happens the first year the Sedins are gone? Maybe miss the playoffs and get that high pick.

We know they aren't going to intentionally tank. But there is a good chance they will falter and miss the playoffs once or twice over the next few years.

I'm a little more patient than you and I could be gullible for feeling more positive about the club today than I have felt over the last few summers.

I wonder if anyone will ever follow the 'vancouver model' as a way to build a franchise?

Feck the tank, I like the Detroit approach to always being competitive.

Not only that but he was criticized for many of the same thing the WD was.

Didn't play Stamkos enough, specifically when down a goal.
Played his injured goalie.
Sat back when they had the the lead and tried to protect.

Rookie Coach's are going to make mistakes as are rookie players and rookie mgmt.

Nothing wrong with pointing out those mistakes but it doesn't mean they need to be replaced immediately.

I've probably been one of the biggest critics of Benning's moves on here from day one but I still don't want him replaced, I just want him to learn from what I see as some mistakes.

Canes are a bad example. Now sub in tampa in your post above and I would certainly rather have followed their progression.

Carolina was mentioned earlier, all their high draft picks and they are still sucking...

Edmonton has been tanking since their loss in the finals and losing Pronger. I don't want to go through that.

Tanking doesn't guarantee success.

I'd love to have one of those top 5 picks but you can still find guys later in drafts, like a Tarasenko or Getzlaf.

Yes I know but we have all seen the stats on draft position/likelihood of playing in the NHL and drafting in the top 5 greatly improves your chances of finding an impact player.

Just playing the percentages.

And if it's your money (whether you are a season ticket holder or an owner) you want to protect your investment. Just like in poker. The best players in the world understand the percentages.

I have an idea...as we all believe WD is a good coach in the regular season why don't we keep him and then bring back Torts. wD gets us to the playoffs and then our Assistant coach (torts) switched to head coach in the playoffs while Willie rides the pine. torts after all won a Stanley Cup so he must be an exceptional playoff coach only. Can this solution put this issue to bed?

I don't have a problem with Clb, Fla, Edm position right now. Their draft position didn't cause them to fail. Poor drafting maybe, poor management maybe, poor interest from UFAs maybe, lack of payroll maybe, but their draft position has been solid.

The tank method is doing its job. It's time for those management teams to step up and take advantage of the windfall.

That's the crutch of it. It doesn't matter if you tank if you can't draft and develop well. Anaheim is a perennial contender and they currently only have one top-10 pick on their roster (Hampus Lindholm- 6th overall).

Good morning,

I take my best stab at sorting through the NHL's waiver rules so we're clear on who's eligible and who's exempt next season, in the new blog:

But set for what? A first round exit... again?

I really hope that the canucks development system has been improved because if JB and crew are constantly picking in the 15-20 spot every year their development coaches will have to work miracles to get them the core they need to compete for a cup.

Thats the only thing that worries me about Miller... not how bad he can be... but how good he can be. I actually would be disappointed if he has a big season like he's capable of.

100% agree.

I should have phased my posts as you have above. I've been going on and on about this for the very same reason. The guy is a very good goalie. If he has a monster year he's actually slowing down the retool/rebuild process. In my current state of pessimism I know that is exactly what's going to happen.

That's all I'm pissed about.

Maybe we can counter Miller's big season with a Sedin injury.
