Just a random thought: do you think Hextall might want to keep as many of our prospects out of the NHL for as long as possible so that he doesn't have to use protection on them when expansion comes in 2-3 years?
Edit: I know he wants to develop them, just wonder if this is a small thought in the back of his mind as well. |

4 years I could see....5 is pushing it, at least for me. 6 years? Those last two years, you're basically going all in at the gambling table; you're praying at that point this guy will still be close to the same player at that age.
He'll likely go first overall at the expansion draft - mochoson
That's crazy term for a guy on the other side of 30. |

The flyers will be screwed if there is expansion in two-three years.
You're allowed to protect what, 12 guys or something? |

IIRC it was something like that. But you could also only lose 2 players I believe.

Right now I'd be protecting
G
Jake
Simmonds
Coots
Konecny
BSchenn
Provorov
Sanhiem
Ghost
Morin
MDZ
Mason
I guess that isn't so bad. Laughton would almost certainly be taken in that scenario. |

Here's what I see:
Forwards:
Giroux
Voracek
Raffl
Simmonds
Couturier
B. Schenn
Laughton
Goalie:
Mason
That leaves room for 4 more players. Gotta think that Morin and Ghost are 2. |

Do we have more than 12 players that are critical and necessary to protect ? Morin gost sanheim prov konecy (of they are in nhl and developed) giroux jake coots simmonds, mason.. anyone else could honestly yo and I wouldn't sweat a thing. Protect laughton cousins too if they're there I guess
I think deeper teams will be in a lot more trouble than us. I find it tough to see us being a highly picked at team from an expansion franchise. |

I believe that RFA's don't have to be protected, and I don't think you can lose players who haven't played in the NHL (unless you want to declare them eligible) so Konecny, Provorov, and Sanheim may not be an issue. |

Laughton is over valued in philly. The sentiment is not so league wide as we think it is. Deeper teams will have a lot better exposed.

If everyone on ELC is already protected than the best player a team may get from us is raffl or read. |

Right now there is still no transfer agreement with the Russian Hockey Federation, so the NHL team holds the player's rights indefinitely. Supposedly an agreement is close (but that's been said for months), which would make transfers more systematic on one hand but also put more specific time limits on the signing window.
I suspect it could end up being four years. - bmeltzer
I figured the lack of a transfer agreement gave them an extended window...thanks, Bill |

I don't think players on ELCs will be exposed to the expansion draft. |

Since he's elected arbitration, the Flyers have lost some of their advantage, and other teams know that. The return right now would be less than it was 2 weeks ago. |

What's his old self?
He's really only had one bad season and that was the one he went from NY to Nashville. |

Probably would've happened at the draft if the willingness to move was there.
On a one year deal he will yeild the biggest return at the deadline. I see him having another good year. Maybe they move him for a pair of 2nds. Possibly a 1st if its a strong year for him. |

Well a team that finished 7 worst in the league and has missed the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years must be loaded with talent.
The Flyers have four standout players in Giroux, Simmonds, Voracek, and Mason. There are two questions marks, at least to some fans, in B.Schenn and Couturier as far as what they are at the NHL level. This is year 5 so that answer is coming real soon. Everybody else on this roster is nothing special and I doubt the Flyers will be adding more than 6 great prospects over the next 2-3 years. The expansion draft might actually help the Flyers lose some drek. |

I wonder if they could do a RFA for RFA swap. Maybe another team is having a hard time coming to a deal with their own RFA.

Now isn't the time to trade him but if someone needs a Dman in the preseason and sees Del Zotto as a fit I wouldn't hesitate to trade him for a proper return. |
