Man, Kesler got paid. Still a great player, but I still think he'll miss his fair share of those 6 seasons. I'd be nervous if the Canucks signed him to that deal.

I'd be interested to get Nucker's take on the Johnny Oduya signing. When I've watched him play, I've thought, not a great defenceman. And here he is singing for $3.75million/year. What do the fancy stats say?

Someone did it to Horton and we saw how that all worked out. All that would have happened is another suspension and wouldn't have changed anything. Let's put 2011 to bed, there was no way we were going to win that series with the injuries we had and the abrupt change to the officiating.

Very true. However a goof like Marchand deserved to get his block knocked off regardless of the outcome of the series. The Horton thing well...the league was just looking for a reason.

Playing behind Keith and Toews will tend to make even average players look good. Check their boxcars, almost identical counting stats

I thought it was pretty fair value. He is an older less mobile Tanev but both play the game the same way.

I think he will be more useful to the Stars than Daley was.

As far as his advanced stats goes, they are pretty decent but a lot of that goes with playing for the best team in the NHL.
From last year.
Top 20 in Corsi of his age group (28+)
Top 15 in Scoring Chance differential in his age group
Top 20 in High Scoring chance differential in his age group
Top 20 in Fenwick of his age group

The top players being Keith, Boychuk, Campbell, Goligowski, Burns, Greene.
Middle of the pack being Suter, Jackman, Garrison, Martin, Byfuglien, Seabrooke
Closest comparable being S.Weber, Michalek, Markov, Beachemin, Enstrom, Bouwmeester, Kronwall among others.

Edit. I also only included players who had played 1000 min or more (55 games at ~18 min a night)

Considering that Dallas got a top 4 defender who just won his 2nd cup for essentially the same price as Sbisa I think it is a great deal.

I think if a team had signed him for 2 x 5 they still would of been getting good value.

So the fancy stats say he is better. Who was his most usual partner? I wonder how Sbisa would fair as the 6th d on a championship caliber team. I guess his Ducks stats would be 'champion-ish' where he had trouble sticking in the lineup. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to justify Sbisa's contract or his abilities, or JB's influence on the contract, just that on the surface the two players appear similar.

Sorry for the late blog. I was up till 5 a.m. last night blogging the British Open.

Still kinda fuzzy, but I take a pass at superficial comparisons between Sbisa, Oduya and Justin Schultz, as well as one more trip around the waiver wire and the latest on Sven Baertschi's negotiations.
