Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks: Judging The Kesler Return, Sbisa Comparables, Baertschi With Ryan Kesler's new contract in mind, a look at the return the Canucks received in the Kesler trade, as well as comparing other defensemen to Luca Sbisa and musing on Sven Baertschi's contract negotiations.

Schultz is at least good at one end of the ice. Oduya played a ton of minutes on an elite team so to me Sbisa even being compared to either of them is a slap in their faces.

Baertschi is a greedy b****. He hasn't prove himself in the NHL yet and now he wants more money

I agree to a certain extent Nucker, but like Carol said we will be able to judge more effectively this season.

They biggest difference between Oduya and Sbisa contractually is that Sbisa was a RFA in the midst of a pedestrian to poor season, (depending on who you ask) Oduya was an UFA who just won the cup.

Thanks Carol for more updates on the waiver status of Grenier.....would be really good for both Utica and the Canucks if he is indeed waiver exempt.

The RW depth in Utica is pretty slim and they also have very few vets currently signed.

Strange report on Baertschi, if Benning can't get him signed because they don't have enough cap, get ready for his contract to be the next arguing point.
IMO there is no way he should be getting more than 2 million at this point. Vey has much better AHL numbers and was signed for 1 million.

If Baerschi's contract is a bit over one million, the hair on fire crowd will have something to add to their signature line.

Signed,

To the Sbisa vs Del Zotto comparison...... ( Eklund fix the quoting issue!!!)

11 points in 76 games for Sbisa....... 10 goals and 32 points in 64 games for Del Zotto....... that is an extreme reach.... Sbisa is even overpaid on his peak potential nevermind where he is now.... he should be getting around a million a yr. I don't like how much of a whiny biotch that nucker has become but he is right about Sbisa.

Lets hope its correct and franson has significantly dopped asking price. Think he was looking for 5.5 M for 6 yrs. Lets try 3M. Problem is then how do you get more cap space for sven? Who leaves?..

That brings me to an interesting topic. I Remember there was some stipulation that you could go over the cap but for a price that would be paid to nhl. Details are fuzzy now.....Something like for every 1-2 M you go over you pay 1M in penalty. Im surprised some teams havent exercised this. Ok so lets say youre a team that has $ like the canadian clubs, detroit, chicago, nyr, etc. Wouldnt it be worth it to lose that 1M if the player you signed (that puts you over the cap) makes you that much better? Lets say its canucks and sven gets 1.3M and franson signs for 3M.....thats 4.3M and we have 2.8 in cap space I believe. So 1.5 over. If it costs you 1M isnt it worth it to have franson on your PP?! Can make the difference between making playoffs and not..... or winning a series.

Maybe im missing some piece of it but otherwise im surprised teams arent using it otherwise.

Carol....care to weigh in??. School us on how this works if im wrong.

We wouldnt have to lose anyone to make cap space if this is true......if not who do you trade to make space for franson? Please voice opinions on who

nhl has a hard cap (with the 10% overage exception during the off season).

i think you're referring to the nba or perhaps the luxury tax in baseball.

Ya, I think you are confused, there is no fine for being over the cap, you just can't do it.

You can be up to 10% over the cap until the season starts I believe, perhaps that is what you are referring to?

No it was nhl. It could be im thinking ofnthe 1st salary cap not the new one.
Still I think its there. I mean there has to be a deterrent for going over otherwise teams would do it anyway.

So whats the penalty?

Again otherwise who do you trade to make room

Just stirring the pot.

But to be fair, you can't compare offensive production only. They are clearly different players. Del Zotto could barely get signed last year, oft injured, etc.

I just don't think Sbisa is a terrible signing is all (and i realise i'm in the minority on that one). A bit overpaid, sure, but mgmt were securing some stability on the backend with the planned ejection of Bieksa.

the nhl has a hard cap. during the season, you cannot exceed it. what you proposed is not possible.

So then nhl fav teams like boston or toronto would be so far over the cap every year without the nhl clamping down.

Like I said there must be a deterrent

Easy, trade Edler for Hoffman and a 2nd.
