i believe there was a luxury tax in place that allowed teams to spend over the cap. not sure if that's still in place or something else. also not sure i'd look to the nba as a model for anything the nhl would emulate.

The NHL adopted the "Bird" rights. An NHL team can sign a player for more years and money then a FA team can.

I like the exemption rules. something like a Veteran exemption where you can have a vet signed on a 1 year deal at a certain price that doesn't count against the cap.

Hmm
So Mark Streit finishes 2nd in the entire NHL for pp points for a dman, but he's not great on the powerplay.

Yup, that makes perfect sense to me.

- BiggE

Great is subjective. I personally reserve the adjective great for players like Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe, Orr. etc. You may have a different definition of the term great. Streit's PP point totals are a combination is his ability as a PP QB, and playing on a really good PP, with players like Giroux, Voracek, and Simmonds. PP point totals can also be affected by the number of PP's a team gets.

Would you label Matt Carle as a great offensive defenseman, in his time with the Flyers?

It's the same situation TB has with Matt Carle right now. They signed him to a deal comparable to AMAC and he's been underperforming to put it nicely. TB is aggressively trying to get rid of him.

Where are you getting the information that TB is aggressively trying to get rid of him.

I have voted for the 10% exemption rule. Any player that you drafted who has never left your organization has their cap hit reduced by 10%. That way, you get rewarded (cap-wise) for keeping home-grown talent. It would give teams like the Flyers and Rangers incentive to keep their own home-grown players so that they're not "poaching" UFAs.

Honestly, if AMac could go out and play quality D while generating 5 or 6 goals and 25-30 points, I'd be fine with him at 5 million. I have yet to see that player.
- BiggE

I think that is a reasonable expectation for the player. He has only played one full season as a Flyers. He needs to be better offensively. One of the biggest issues with the team last year, is that they did not generate enough shots. MacDonald was a part of that. Berube scratched him for a few games for not skating and being more aggressive offensively. Berube pushed the team the entire season to try and generate more shots.

I like that.

I think a vet exemption would be nice. Maybe something where you can sign a certain vet at a certain minimum and not count against the cap.

I don't know if there's any sourced news about TB's management aggressively trying to move Carle. I do know some of the hardcore fans there are scathing about him. And next summer when Stamkos needs an $10m+ extension Yzerman may think Carle's cap hit is too much to justify.

The think I notice about Carle is that he's still a solid defenseman, still moves the puck very well, but his offensive point production seems to have dried up.

I would honestly hope that players are smart enough to understand that going to the mat for every single aging player whose best days are long gone is silly

Once upon a time, Wheels came into the league and somebody else got pushed out. It's the nature of things, and whether it's Chief, Hakstol or Scotty Bowman telling you, that just isn't going to change -- sometimes, it's your turn

Dunno, just watching Toews hand Kimmo the Cup first, despite him being a passenger/dead weight during their run... seems cache and seniority still carry a lot of weight in NHL dressing rooms.

And like you said, one day the guy getting kicked to the curb is going to be you -- so even if you've got something to gain from that vet sitting, you probably still aren't gonna feel happy about seeing him get pushed to the margins without the obligatory 3-months to find his game.

They maybe carry some weight. I also think there was some sympathy as he came back from blood clots and was known to be retiring after the season.

They traded for Garrison and he had a hell of a season, is the same age as Carle, and makes $0.9m less. And then there's Coburn on his expiring contract. Maybe Yzerman thinks Carle is expendable because their top 4 is Hedman-Stralman & Garrison-Coburn, and they could play Koekkoek on the 3rd pairing? It's just speculation on my part, but it's an interesting situation down there with multiple former Flyers involved.

Carle has an NTC I don't know the details of, so I don't think TB could just ship him of to Buffalo for a pick as easily as Philly could with MacDonald. Assuming Buffalo is actually interested in either of them.

I think that was a large part of it. It wasn't just that he hadn't won before. Everyone knew that it was his last game, and they understood that him even lacing them up last year was an accomplishment in itself. So yes, part of it was respect shown to a guy who hadn't won before, but it may have been different if he wasn't on the way out (i.e. if it was Streit instead).

I will weep if Hakstol gives in to that way of thinking -- I understand every word you said, but it's crazy

I'm all for giving everyone a chance in training camp, because if you are under contract, you deserve an opportunity

But if you emerge from camp as the 13th forward -- as I fully expect Wheels will -- then that's what you are, and as the coach, you are effing nuts if you drive yourself insane trying to make a 13th forward be more than that

Totally agree.

Just say it was Coburn that was traded there. Do you think he would be getting it first from Toews. I might be wrong but I really doubt he hands it to him first. I just think it was more a sympathy type thing.

I don't think that "sympathy" is the right word. He wasn't some kid whose dog just died that everyone felt sorry for. He was a well-respected player around the league who had paid his dues and given all that he could to the game, and I'm sure that was recognized by the team, and they knew that, since the "core" had already won one, he deserved to be the first one to get it due to all of the circumstances.
