The Isle not wanting to pay him what he could command in the UFA market, doesn't mean spit! That does not define a player. All that matter now, is how MacDonald plays in the future. The post just made does not include the possibility of MacDonald playing better than he did last season, and is just more of the same of what steelydan referenced. More snap final judgements on what MacDonald is as a player, without considering the possibility that he just had an off year. - MJL
Injuries marriage and a newborn baby. What ever could of caused an off year ? Anyone whose ever had a newborn in the house can speak to how they did at work that month. |

That's definitely a much better 2nd unit than last years.

Since he doesn't play on the PK, I would just doubleshift Simmonds on the PP, the same way they used to do with Kerr in the 80s. I would then put Umberger in Schenns spot.
Edit: or Raffl for Schenn if Umberger can't cut it. White could occasionally spell Simmonds on the 2nd unit |

All the people ripping on AMac don't even look at the statistics!
I just love this Corsi With/Without chart on AMac the year we traded for him. Corsi W/WO is a favorite of mine: tracks how a player X does when on ice playing with player Y vs without player Y. And vice versa. Helps expose a weak link on a line or pairing by showing how players do independent and dependent on each other.
Nothing I see here indicates he's anything other than a remarkably solid top four d man who is solid in his own end and in pushing pace out of it. Just look at the chart I linked to......scan your eyes down the "When on Ice Together" Column CF%, then the MacDonald Apart CF% column, then Teammate Apart CF%. AMac doesn't get nearly enough credit imo.

It's certainly possible that those issues were contributing factors. I personally feel that he's been affected by the same basic issues that Sean Couturier has been affected by. MacDonald was given responsibilities and placed in a role in NY that he's really not suited for. He played too many minutes against top lines. To the point where he's become too cautious, and play too safe of a game. He spent too much time in a shut down role. He needs to be remolded almost in a sense from a defensive defenseman, to a 2 way puck mover. Needs to be more aggressive on the offensive side of the puck. There's a fine line on both sides of that puck. He needs to use his skating and puck skills to make more of an impact. |

Yep, the brief time he was a Flyer after being acquired at the trade deadline, he played well. For 19 games. This is what is called a small sample size. Much more telling are his numbers with most of the Isles, who are almost all better without MacDonald than with.
To MacDonald's credit, his possession numbers were very solid as a Flyer last season, too. Especially when the Corsi QOC was lower for him. |

Hexy wanted Provorov. It's probably the one secret that got out before he made the move |

I just want to see AMac push the puck a little more, be a little more aggressive both with the puck and at the blue line without the puck.
Maybe some of that had to do with Berube's direction and usage.
I think we will know pretty early what Hack has planned in terms of Amac usage and role.
Do I think he is a terrible player? Not by a long shot. I DO think he is overpaid by 1 or 2 million, but that could change three years from now as salaries adjust. - MBFlyerfan
To me, AMac is the anti-Ghost. Didn't Terry Murray say something about how elite Gostisbehere is with the puck but has to work on the 99% of the time he doesn't? I don't know enough about hockey to critique AMac's positional work and what not, but he seems decent in that regard and certainly is a good shotblocker. But man oh man is he brutal with the puck on his stick. It seems like almost every pass he tries to make is a turnover or an icing. |

I'm not sure what you're watching, but MacDonald is solid with the puck in his own end. He's very adept at buying space and time, and making a good outlet pass in his own end. MacDonald was charged with 25 giveaways last season in 58 games played, which is very good. Now granted giveaways aren't a perfect stat, because it varies from building to building, but that is certainly an indication that he is good with the puck.
