Pretty cool video, though. Shows Kekalainen and Davidson at the Jackets draft table. Got a call from Toronto, who was offering 4th overall for all three of CBJ's 2nd rounders. They refused. In the video, Kekalainen calls Ray Shero to see what it'd cost to move to 6th overall, and the price is 8th overall, plus their 2nd and 5th rounders. Kekalainen is intrigued, but only if Hanifin is still on the board.
Kekalainen gets asked why he doesn't call Carolina and says he did, prior to the draft and was told they had no interest in moving down, so he was waiting on them to see if he could do a deal with NJ. Hextall calls and Kekalainen can't hear him and goes to talk to him. He comes back and says that Hextall had an offer of the 9th overall, plus a 3rd rounder for the 7th pick, and Hexy was fishing to see if the Jackets were going to take his guy.
After Hanifin goes, the Jackets stand pat and watch Zacha and Provorov go, and they gladly take Werenski. According to Aaron Portzline, the excellent Jackets beat guy, they had McDavid and Eichel at the top of their list, followed by Hanifin and Werenski. During the video, Kekalainen notes the difference between the two for him is razor thin.
The Hextall stuff is around the 4:15 mark - Jsaquella

Thanks for posting, I wish every team posted something like that. I understand that if you didn't get your man you wouldn't want it posted but some real gems in there. I wonder what would have happened if Hexy made that trade. Seems like a real gamble just for another 3rd rounder. I could have seen SJS taking Werenski and then CLB settling on taking Provorov.

You guys will have just as hard of a time dumping Lupul as we will Viinny.
I would want no part of Gardiner
Kadri.. Maybe. Kid has talent, think he has to get out of Toronto |

Agreed, I would have interest in Kadri.
Though I would also have limited interest in Gardiner. I would not pay a premium for him but he is a gifted young player. Lupul is exactly what this team does not need (older, injury prone player) but I think he will be easier to trade then Vinny. Think about it like this: Would you trade Vinny for Lupul? Answer: Yes.

Streit for Buff
Luke for Roussel who can play LW on 3rd line
This gives us some edge and guys who can play. Flyers get an audition from Buff, if they don't like.. Use the money from Streits contract in very good UFA class
Jets get extra year from experienced PP guy.
Vinny and Umberger combine to form the most expensive press box combination in NHL history |

Philly needs a winger and interested in shedding some salary.
Couturier is best player in deal (imo) but Kadri a good #2 C (on Leafs this year will be #1C for sure, will probably get 50-60 points).
Philly would not mind getting rid of Luke Schenn and would love to dump Vinny's contract.
Brayden Schenn great player, but not 'untouchable' on the phi roster.
Kadri < Couturier
Lupul > Luke Schenn
Gardiner < Brayden Schenn
vinny's caphit >> Vinny
it's not that clear who would be 'winner' in this deal, could potentially be both teams (Phi gets a 2nd line scoring LW, a young #2C who would fit in great on the team and Gardiner as a puckmoving D-men with good upside). |

Not trading Couturier in that package. No way. Not interested in Gardiner. Toronto traded Kessel, Kadri had 39 points in 73 games last year. Now he's going to get 60 this year? |

That does not shed any salary for the Flyers. Lupul, Kadri & Gardiner are a combined $13.4mm. That was about $1mm more than the Flyers involved.
It's not a good enough deal for the Flyers. |

Couturier is practically untouchable. And certainly not going anywhere for that package. I just looked at Gardnier's contract and with that cap hit and length I am uninterested for a player that is mostly one dimensional. But if you want someone to play with you here it goes....
Perhaps something like:
PHI: Gardiner, Kadri
TOR: Schenns, Laughton, Manning & Vinny (for cap purposes only- or take RJ)
The flyers would then immediately trade Streit to free up playing time for Gardiner.
The problem with trading between these teams is that both are looking to get youth....so it's tricky. Also, the Flyers have very little cap space.

Horrible trade any way you cut it. Why give up assets for an unproven D man when we now have the deepest D prospect pool in hockey. |

No interest in giving up real assets for Gardiner. Not interested in B. Schenn + Laughton for Kadri, even with the Vinny cap dump.
You basically took the other deal, substituted Laughton and Manning for Couturier and removed Lupul from Toronto's end. I'm not sure if I like that more or less. |

That trade is worse than what the Toronto fan proposed in my opinion. I'm not taking a bath on a deal, just to rid the team of the Lecavalier contract.

Awesome video. Interestingly, Shero wanted a 2nd and 5th to move down 2 spots, but Hextall seemed like he was considering an offer to move down 2 spots only getting back a 3rd.
The only way it makes sense for Hextall to do that deal is if he had a forward rated neck and neck with Provorov. That way if both Provorov and Werenski goes he still has a guy he really wanted.
I don't do the deal for just a 3rd. A second round pick, and maybe. |

Lupol has 1 more year left in him, maybe 2 IMO.
I'd rather keep Couturier over Kadri.
Flyers don't need anymore D men.
So... no. |

Its no good no matter what you do but I also have 0 interest in Lupul. I know Gardiner's contract is a nightmare. But to say he isn't worth anything isn't fair. I was trying to humour the kid. Substituting Laughton and Manning for Coots is an obvious win for Philly but overall...
I wouldn't do either trade.
Shoot, I wouldn't trade B Schenn for Kadri straight up, at best it is a wash and at worst we get softer. |
