Blade Runner...
Heavy Metal The Movie-Best Cartoon movie before Frozen (I kid, I kid)
Hot Dog the Movie-classic 80's ski boob flick

Heavy Metal is pretty awesome. Some that top my list;

1)Jacobs Ladder
2)Dead Man (Jim Jarmucsh)
3) They Live
4) Bubba Ho-Tep
5) Barbarella

For Canadiana Hard Core Logo was a great flick.

The Oscar movies generally favour classical, sweeping Hollywood dramas, so the Oscar winners often aren't the key films from that year in retrospect. Dances with Wolves wins instead of Goodfellas. Forrest Gump wins instead of Pulp Fiction. Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson have directing Oscars, Hitchcock never got one. Basically pick a notable director who hasn't won for directing and use the Costner/Gibson comparison, that says it all.

Sometimes you'll have a Godfather, or Silence of the Lambs, or Network that wins the Oscar and really is one of the great films of that year, but Oscar exludes entire genres, plays it safe and uplifting instead of edgy, and is mostly a marketing exercise.

I agree with that 100%

No I said character development was something movie critics care about. I care about sex, guns and explosions. And comedy.

So, essentially, your attitude towards movies is 180 degrees opposed to your attitude to music (if your comments on music are to be taken at face value). Not a criticism. Just an observation.

That's not inaccurate, though in music, I like almost everything. My record collection spans from the cheesiest crap in existence to the most obscure pretentious weirdo music.

I think when I was like in my late teens and early twenties I was headed for movie-snob territory when I started taking an English degree. I didn't want to spend all day reading these great big depressing novels and then "relax" by watching a serious movie.

Now, I don't know, I can't take any of that Darren Aronofsky BS - give me Paul Blart 2 and Wicker Man and I'm good to go......that being said though, I do understand how on technical merit Apocolypse Now! is a better movie than Lethal Weapon 2, I just don't really care.

Try Rebecca.

There are a lot of good movies the Academy picks. Unforgiven, Platoon. Deer Hunter. The Departed. Braveheart. French Connection. Plenty of action there.

I'm surprised an English major like Tanner would have so little respect well-written, thought-provoking screenplays.

I do have respect, it's just not what I dig watching. Like, movies are how I relax, what do I want to be depressed for?

Obviously you can choose some great movies the Academy does recognize, but even if you do like classy art films, they still tend to go for overly sentimental, populist dreck.

Rebecca won Picture, which goes to the producer. And it's a good example, because that was a big Selznick production, in which he exerted a lot of control. It's not the most Hitchcockian of Hitchcock films by any means. They gave an Oscar to Selznick for that, but they never gave Hitchcock himself a directing award for his true masterpieces. Psycho was too radical and dark, or Vertigo, and they are considered among the greatest films of all time now. It's just crazy that aside from a lifetime achievement award, one of the supreme masters never won a directing Oscar.

Great film. That and The Pianist are my two current favorite WW2 films.

Point taken. Never really cared for his 60's work onwards but the 40s 50s work was quite impressive. Generally liked his spy films more than the straight murder tales.

We ended up at a place called Jack Astors

Were you in Mississauga by any chance? I think they passed a law that a Jack Astors must be within one mile of any movie theater.

Agreed with Bingo, Portland would be a great choice; awesome city, ready to go arena, large enough population plus they actually know what ice looks like. Honestly I'd put a team in each Seattle and Portland, go for the ready-made rivalry.

Move Florida and Arizona, Add Quebec, Seattle, Portland and either LV/Milwaukee (Wisconsin LOVES their hockey and they already have an arena) and the conferences are now balanced also

if the nordiques had stayed in Quebec for the 96 season these were going to be the new uniforms. they were ready for a re-brand then, let alone now.

Mr Tanner, agree on the Nordique, disagree on the logo. Dale Hawerchuk is not on this team. New franchise, new identity.
And may I present the California Golden Seals...

As a graphic designer, and a follower of your blog, I've got to say, you couldn't be more wrong about the new Jets logo. That thing is wonderful, it's simple, and strong. It has solid colour choices, and it stands out. The worst logo in professional sports (non racist)? Give your head a shake.

The Wild, Blue Jackets, Ducks, Panthers, and Predators all have awful logos, and that's just the NHL. I won't even START with the other big three.

I don't like it, it looks like it should be the logo of Haliburton or something. Clearly this is a personal choice, but I would say it's the worst in the NHL by a scale of Hoobastank to the Beatles.

I agree with you on the Jets, I like the refresh and I like the new subtleties with regards to the military, True North, etc.

I disagree with you regarding the Wild logo, it took me years to realize it was a bear/animal head!

I saw the animal head right away... I didn't see the trees/stars for a long time.
