I love the under current of confusion from matt that chiarelli hasn't really made a bunch of massive roster overhauling moves. but there's also still that tinge of excuses as he pretty much hung his hat on the 'it was all macts fault' and 'chiarelli will change everything' bandwagon.
essentially comes down to his lack of understanding of the realities the oilers were/are in.

I wouldn't say theres one fundamental change that chiarelli has made in terms of the roster that mact wouldn't have also done given the chance.

Once McDavid sweeps was announced the org had to get rid of the negativity surrounding the 'old boys management club' which is why things changed so fast- McDavid sweeps pointed straight to change for the entire org... Agree that there were no monumental changes... But the passive routine of 2-3 years competing is likely down to 1(this season improve and get out of the basement)... year 2 playoffs at minimum... Do you recall Eakins interview after he was canned on TSN radio- he was talking dramatic improvements start in new building or along those lines... But its true McDavid brought on Katz's OEG movement...

You couldn't be more right, PC was essentially handed the best young roster in the league. All the ground work has been done and he just has to do the fine tuning. He will get way to much credit for "turning things around" while MacT will always be portrayed as a bad GM. MacT drafted Nurse and he is the most important piece for the oilers moving forward, more so then mcDavid IMO

This passive routine you speak of in regards to mact was because of necessity and reality. And of pc has proven that he isn't more aggressive than mact. In fact, he's followed very much the same template ( trade for an available goalie with question marks, add depth to the bottom 6, sign what defender he could, draft high etc)
And of has the luxury of only one year of passivity because the first couple years have already been suffered through by the previous regime.

And Eakins comments about improvements are exactly my point. Those who didn't understand the realities mact was faced with were too quick to blame him. And it's funny, we got mcdavid and the changes are still incremental. Only difference is because the mongs have hung their hats on "yay pc/Macts fault", they'll make excuses for pc. Which is unnecessary because it's just reality.

Get rid of old boys? Mact, Lowe, howson all still work for the oilers.
