The money I was referring to was the money his mother gave him for music lessons. What a schlub. - PLindbergh31
Parents paying for their children to get music lessons? Come on, get out of here. Next thing, you'll be telling me they'll pay for their kids to pay youth sports! |

I love Led Zep and Page is on my top 5 favorite guitarists as one myself. Best word I can use to encompass his music would be "majestic." Lol having typed that it sounds a little lame, but I stand by it 100%. Food for thought: as great as he was on electric, I think he may have been an even better acoustic player. He just made it sing with those chime-like open strings and whatnot.
My only problem with them is song length. Sometimes there's nothing better than a 6, 7, 8 minute song if its earned. All you fellow Zep lovers know those epic length songs that work, but a lot of their stuff can just goes on. And on. I personally like Plant's warbly singing, but I can see how it gets a little old after a while. Still love 'em though. - Mononoke
Kashmir is an 8+ minute song, very powerful. On the other hand, Stairway imo not their finest work. I can take or leave that song. |

Ringo's loose hi hat is the thing of legends. He put it on the map. Oh look. More revolutionary material from the greatest band ever. Just another day.
Wait. Just another day...that was a McCartney tune. |

If I have any desire to listen to something more than 6 minutes, I'm putting on the dead, phish, widespread panic, etc. |

Absolutely! He and McCartney were fantastic together - BiggE
What REALLY sets the Beatles apart from 99% of bands is the Paul/Ringo "rhythm" section.
When you think of bass + drums, you think of Fleetwood Mac. The backbone. Tight and clean and the spine of the song. Mick and McVie....
But Ringo and Paul, similarly to JPJ and Bonzo, would just- do their own thing, but make it work. Paul's bass riffs were part of the song just as Ringo's drumming was. The video talks about Come Together- perfect example. |

Ringo fits perfectly in with the idea that being a skilled musician and being a great musician can often be two entirely separate things. Rule of thumb: if it sounds good, it is good. If it doesn't, it isn't worth bupkis.
People were talking about death metal and the like earlier and that fits right in with that too. Specific to guitar, I simultaneously awe at the skill while being amazed to find they indeed do have ears attached to the sides of their heads. It isn't my thing; if it's yours, more power to you. But I think a single note or a few of them can have a whole heck of a lot more oomph and emotion to them than any speedy scale run. I just feel like there's no character, no FEEL there. Feel is everything. It's why Neil Young can just mash away during an electric solo on a single note over and over and it just resonates with you. You need speed and dexterity bc fast licks sound awesome and there's a time and a place, but music first and foremost is what sounds good, not what looks good. My two cents. |

JPJ is one of my all time favorite bass players. Like I said, never was the biggest zep fans, but listening to his bass work was one of the reasons I switched from playing guitar to bass in a band. - benjichronic
So then how does Them Crooked Vultures not make your list? |

If people like GD/Phish/etc. that's fine. As a 70s taper, my dad brought me up on the Dead. But, as for Phish fans, I have a feeling I'd get into about a bajillion fights if I went to one of their concerts. |

Only 29 spots below Conan O'Briens house drummer. - PLindbergh31
The fact that Bonham and Baker are not #1 and 2 make this list irrelevant. Peart is not the best. Sorrryyyy |

My boss is a metal guitarist.
He says it takes no skill. It's just string jumping exercises, basically.
He always said the people that think metal guitarists are good because of the speed aspect of it don't know enough about the instrument.

This sums up Dream Theater for me. Individually, those guys are some of the best in the world at what they do. As a band that writes songs, they're below average at best. |

LOVE them crooked. And it's because they're bastards and have teased me with one (frank)ing album lol If they came out with another as good as their last, they'd easily bust right into my top 10.

There's a reason he's not in a big metal band.
Sure there are some who just play fast scales really well. But the best guitar player I've ever met was a great metal guitarist, but his acoustic sets were flat-out amazing.
Bottom line is, if you're good, it doesn't matter what type of music you want to play, you're still good. |

When I'm in the mood for pure guitar greatness, I usually go with guys like Jeff Beck, Al Dimeola or Pat Metheny |
