I don't blame Sven or his agent trying to squeeze out an extra 100K or two. They know Benning gave up a decent pick for him and Benning isn't considered to be a string negotiator so why not try to take advantage to add a little more to their bank accounts? - Nucker101
Anything over 1.2Mill per year would be considered a fail IMO. Sure he has been sold as a top 6 winger. He hasn't proven that though. He should sign for 1 year at 1 mill, then prove he can pot 20 goals and then negotiate higher $'s next summer . |

Bo makes 900 K and Virtanen also
Vey makes 1 mil. Why does a guy with 10 goals in 70 games deserve more? - VANTEL
Unfortunately I don't think it has anything to do with what he deserves but what his perceived value is the organization.
Did Sbisa deserve a his raise and extension ?
Did Miller deserve the length of contract?
Did Dorsett deserve the raise and term of his contract?
Is Bartkowski worth nearly double of what Irwin got?
All of that is debatable but my point is that those players were valuable to Benning because he felt they needed, steady goal-tending presence, depth on D and toughness. He paid for them because he didn't have them.
Just like I think he feels they need young NHL ready talent so, he might "over pay " to get it.
I'm not trying to debate good or bad moves, I just think there is a pattern that shows he identifies areas of concern and addresses them as he see fit without worrying too much about the market value of those assets. |

We can only speculate, for all we know it might be term and not the money that's the holdup. |

He's played 69 games in the NHL in 4 yrs, that's 17 games a year and his last contract was 895K and 70K in the AHL. If he wants a 1 way contract it will be 600-900K. - A_SteamingLombardi
Agreed. Pulkinen just signed for a 735K, one-year deal. He's shown more than Baertschi has in the past year. Benning has to keep the deal at under 900K or he overpaid.
Even with Baertschi signed this has been a sleep-worthy summer for us. The Canucks have undoubtedly gotten worse on paper, and they have little cap space to remedy the problem. |

Benning can't afford to let him sit, but he can't overpay either. I mean like 1.5 or more |

I could be totally off with everything I say next, but here's my theory:
I think Sven's camp wants a longer term deal so they can have a manageable cap hit but make it bigger for the next contract. Similar to what Calgary did to O'Reilly's offer sheet structure, where the cap hit was $5m but was being paid $3.5 and $6.5 meaning his next contract required that 5% increase off the $6.5. I could see a 2 year deal in the $2.5m range with 900k first year salary and $1.6m second year |

Benning would have this thing unraveled in no time flat, you are way off, he is a very string negotiator

After dropping Kesler and bieksa (plus others) you think they would have created some breathing room. Nope. Any savings went to pay a 4th liner and a potential 5-6 dman.

I realize people want to keep waiting on making a firm judgement on Benning, but I don't feel you need to watch someone go through all the levels of failure before you can identify him as not the guy you were after.
Benning (it appears) is a decent evaluator of draft talent but GM'ing has more to it than that. He should be head of scouting IMO, not GM. |

They have 22 players on 1 way contracts (or at least waiver eligible - assuming Horvat makes the team again this year) with $2.8m in cap space. If even one rookie plays themselves onto the team and they trade a vet to make room they will have some extra space. You guys are getting all worked up over nothing. |

I'm willing to wait to see how Virtanen pans out and whether or not he tries to go after Lucic next summer.
I think he was gifted a good opportunity to get a great player at # 6 and if he was right with Virtanen, that will go a long way in my books.
I think if he goes after Lucic next summer though, I will have a very hard time following this team. All the other stuff so far has been disappointing but not so bad I'm ready to write him off. |

I heard Botchford on the 1040 this morning mention Lucics name twice. I would maybe keep a seat on the Oilers fan bus reserved just in case |

I'm fully expecting Benning to offer him a big contract if Lucic makes it to free agency. Lombardi would look kinda stupid trading firsts plus Jones for Sekera/Lucic and losing both. |
