In fairness to DP, which I didn't like him, the pick, the trade, etc, he was slowly becoming an allstar/elite G before his meltdown.....
"In Luongo I trusted" - Ur Not Me
I have to disagree. He was what he was between 2003-2008, which was a good middle-of-the-pack NHL goalie with durability issues. There was no sign that he was going to improve upon that. He never learned how to handle the puck in the NHL like Brodeur or Turco and he never lost his penchant for letting in soft goals at inopportune times. |

I believe at the time of the 2006 Olympics, the U.S goalies were ranked: 1. DP; 2. Miller; 3. Quick. - JohnScammo
pretty sure Quick was at Umass in 2006..... |

One of DP's early injuries occurred at the All Star game, so you can't argue that he wasn't an All Star. You can only argue that he did not deserve to be there. |

Yeah, I wasn't sure about that. Esche and Grahame were the other two goalies with DP at those Olympics. The point was really just that once upon a time DP was considered one of the top goalies. And I do seem to recall that DP was ranked ahead of Miller and Quick for a brief time........maybe in 2007? |

The best player on a bad team is likely to make the All-Star team, which RDP most certainly was in 2006 and 2008.
As for the Olympics, 2006 was not exactly a high-water mark for USA Hockey. |

I always thought that circumstance led to DP being a bust. He was a damn good goaltender to start on a sub-par team... I think as the team gained minor increases, he kept the "holy crow, I need to perform better!" mentality. This lead to his eventual string of injuries since he was not in same class of healing as a Hasek or Richter..
He fought and sadly the team kept on believing he could come back. His injuries ruined what he could have been, but the management never agreed to it until too late.
Rick, these days, is doing radio, but I think, if his knees and hip are up to it, he could do goalie coaching. He might not be up to doing the reaches in net, but he could teach them how to do it. |

Usually they give those coaching jobs to players that were students of the game. RDP was as dumb as a bag of hammers on the ice and in his career. If he wants to wear pimp suits and become the Don Cherry/Sal Messina of the Isles' broadcast, that's cool, but he should not have anything to do with the actual team. |
