I am embarrassed to say I own a "fisherman" jersey; my ex-wife bought it for me as a Christmas gift; one of the reasons she's my ex! I wore the jersey to a live broadcast of Canada's CBC TV's pre-playoff special and one of the panel members was Mike Milbury and I really tried to get him to sign the jersey for me but he avoided me like he avoided talented players in the draft. I was sure that if I could have got him to sign it that I would be able to auction it off for charity with the label "the NYI's two biggest mistakes!" Kelly Hrudey was also on the panel and I did get to talk to him after the show and he chuckled at my idea and said I was lucky I didn't get to do it or Milbury probably would have given me a reason to sue him! Hrudey was cool! |

Ironically, John Spano is one of the best owners this team has ever had. The Milstein/Gluckstern scoundrels were even worse.
Sticking with players:
Kirk Muller - You said it.
Oleg Kvasha - never seen a player do less with more than him
Marty Reasoner - Barf
Rick "Red Light" DiPietro - terrible #1 overall pick (not his fault); never was as good as some seem to remember him as being; became a weightlifting nut (the last thing a goalie should be doing to train) and hung on way too long (entirely his fault).
Franchise 4 - Post-Dynasty Era
Pat LaFontaine
Pierre Turgeon
Ziggy Palffy
John Tavares
(actually, that was kind of easy, too). - Snowblind
I would remove Palffy and add KJ who was as solid a defense as the Isles had seen in the post Dynasty era. |

I agree with removing Palffy, but would replace him with Mike Peca, not KJ. The Isles made the playoffs all three seasons that Peca led them, but failed to make the playoffs the season before he arrived and the season after he was traded. His stats are not as gaudy as Palffy's, but he was more of a difference maker. I don't think the Isles ever made the playoffs during the Palffy years. KJ was a very good d-man and deserves honorable mention. |

The Ziggy trade was b/c the owners decided to cut that team Salary to 20 mill or less they were getting from Cable. This was after their hissy fit with SMG and not getting any of the selling concessions, parking, etc... $. It is one of the few trades I don't fault Mike Milbury. ...
As Koolaide guy I like to focus on 1/2 full not empty but my Fraud 4 would be Milbury, Muller, Spano, and one of these 3 high first round picks (scissons, chizowski, and Bret Lindros the better brother).

That guy had one of the redest faces I've ever seen, like fire engine red as soon as he got out on the ice. Seriously bad skin.

Good stuff Noel. Sorry guys...

I have to admit, I bought one of the fisherman t-shirts they were selling in the team store at the Coliseum last season. I despised the fisherman logo and colors when they came out, but now, 20 years later or so with the team wearing the only logo and colors it ever should have, I actually kind of like the fisherman logo on the t-shirt. |

I'm obviously no Islander fan but I would have to think it had a lot to do with the timing. It was right after 94 & the Rangers hoopla so they probably were just trying to reinvigorate team interest but it backfired both with the jerseys & the teams those couple of years they wore them were pretty bad. |

I think it was the World Cup being in the United States that led to this. |

I remember watching that game live and really being concerned for Blake's health. I thought his head was going to pop. |

Ziggy was better than anyone on those 2001-2004 playoff teams. Peca (and Yashin) had one really good season. Ziggy was awesome for 4 seasons during which he played almost every game except for his 30-game holdout. |

Kenny Jonsson was probably my 5th. That said, he never quite developed the offensive side of his game and just could not stay healthy.
Ziggy was awesome and made the otherwise awful late-90s Isles worth watching. |

I think the Chara trade deserves a mention as does the Ryan Smyth trade. |

I agree Palffy was a beast on a terrible team. Can you imagine JT & Palffy on the same line?? |

Palffy scored over 40 goals 3 times including 48 one year playing with facking Robert Reichel. You switch Peca & Palffy and the Isles still don't make the playoffs in the mid 90's and they still make the playoffs in the early 2000's. JT couldn't get those palffy teams into the playoffs they were terrible. I liked Peca but Palffy was a borderline superstar playing on one of the worst teams in the league year after year. In 100 drafts I would take Palffy over Peca, Jonsson & Yashin 100 times! |
