Lot of big names and personalities. Hope it works out like the Isles committee. |

See my comment was about some of the players, not the overall roster. So if you think that bc the isles ranked 4th in offense is fine, which it is, but some of the players could/should be easily replaced was the initial comment of who Petrov could replace. |

not really in the mood to get into it, but im willing to bet you havent seen enough (any?) of Petrov and what he has to offer that you can say that he is better than anyone on the current team. is that fair? |

depends how you value offensive production....from a very basic standpoint:
lightning, stars and rangers have more goals/game.
from just about any and all other standpoints, an argument can be made for:
predators, blackhawks, sharks, kings |

The Kings are one of the worst offensive teams in the league from October to April. They simply cannot score goals in the regular season.
The Sharks also could not score goals last season.
The Preds went through an offensive power outage worse than the Isles did down the stretch.
The Isles are a top offensive team in this league. The Lighting, the Stars, the Blues, the Caps (with their changes), The Hawks (until proven otherwise) and the Rangers are also in the mix. While the Isles could stand to exchange some forward depth for more top-line talent, they are still one of the most potent offensive teams in the league. |

READ: Fancy Stats - LetsGoIsles
When talking about an entire team over the course of an entire season (82 games*60 minutes plus OT), the sample size is big enough that goals scored have enough statistical significance on their own. There is no need for fancy stats when the frame is that large. The Kings are a very good team and are an excellent playoff team, but they cannot score goals in the regular season. That is why they only once finished with home ice in the past 4 seasons and it finally cost them a playoff spot in 2014-2015. Other than the Carter line and Kopitar himself, the team is pretty punchless offensively. There is no way they are even in the top half of the league offensively, let alone elite. (And I say this as a Kings fan - they have long been my #2/Western Conference team). |

They finished 18th overall in the league in G/GP. That's nothing to hang your hat on, but saying that "they can't score goals in the regular season" is a bit much.
Also, the large sample size of an entire season absolutely, 100% does not discount advanced metrics as a meaningful tool. In fact, it strengthens it. |

It's all relative. Maybe for a perennial lottery team like the Oilers finishing 18th in goals is okay, but for a 2-time Stanley Cup champion, I think the "they can't score goals in the regular season" description is accurate. Post-lockout, in this era when the Kings have been an elite team, scoring goals, particularly in the regular season, has absolutely been their weak spot. |

interesting thought process. had this argument didnt include a "2 time stanley cup champion" then i would tend to agree with you...
Like you said its all relative, but the kicker in all of this is that the kings are 2 time stanley cup champions...perhaps the goals scoring statistic doesnt play as much of a role as you believe and that there are other offensive statistics that show the kings are in fact productive offensively. |

OR...The "goal-scoring statistic" is literally the only statistic that matters.
In the playoffs, when the whistles are put away and team defense, size and physicality come to the fore, the Kings excel. They also have a lot players (particularly Quick, Doughty, Kopitar and the since departed Williams) who tend to play at their absolute best when the stakes are the highest. However, as anyone who sees this team play on a regular basis, there are too many times over the course of a season when they simply cannot scratch out a goal even if (as it did down the stretch in 2015) their season depended on it. Also, a lot of their secondary scoring has dried up since the last Cup win (Brown, Richards, Stoll all seriously declined last season). |
