Welcome aboard the tank train. It's a bit of a bumpy ride but the end destination is well worth it. - bloatedmosquito
Well thanks. I'm not up for a 5 year tank. More of a 2 bad years and maximizing draft picks and prospects. First priority needs to be a franchise D. |

I didn't say 'panties' or 'pillow-biter' so I should be safe. Although, a ban would be a blessing these days. |

True, but picking higher increases your odds of finding a top line center or elite #1 d-man. That's undeniable. |

Not denying it, only pointing out that Norris/Con Smyth quality D don't just come in the top 3 picks. |

I knew someone would post that. It has been done like 10 times in the history of drafting that some team pulls a rabbit out of their ass and gets a superstar and some make it seem like this is an annual event of drafting a top Dman . Scouting has really improved over the
Ask few years and just about every team is aware of what a kids potential is. |

OK, let's do it the other way.
In your opinion, who are the "Franchise" D in the league? |

Every team has a #1guy . Doesn't mean he is good.I think the only two Dmen Weber, Doughty quality drafted the last few years are EKblad Jones Josi and Hamilton |

Such a cop out, you are basically proving my point. Want some more names?
Letang - 62nd
Yandle - 105th
Pietrangelo - 4th
Jones - 4th
Carlson - 27th
Giordano - undrafted
Doughty - 2nd
OEL - 6th
Look, drafting higher gives a better chance of picking a truly elite prospect, but there are plenty of excellent quality hockey players to be found in later rounds, or at the end of the first round. |

In the last five years drafting has got more advanced. Franchise players that are drafted late on D are so seldom in the last 5 years. There have been about 20 gems found in the last 20 years . You can't just count on now drafting at 15 th and finding a gem . Very rare. |

EDIT - I would add that Hamhuis (though not drafted by the Canucks) was 12th overall, and Josi was 38th.

We won't know the truth of this for another 5 years. You can count on finding gems in every round, every year. |

This year before the draft Benning was asked on the 1040 if he was trying to move up with a trade. He said no. Then they asked him if he was going to after a Dman with the 23 Rd . He again said probably not they will go after a forward ,BPA, seeing it is such a crap shoot that low in the draft on D. His next pick was 4 th round at the time and I take that as D was not a huge issue.
Managers in the past had somewhat an unwritten rule don't take D in the first round , that is why some nuggets were pulled out in later picks. Managers are now paying a lot more attention to D in the last couple of years . Scouting is so high tech now .
Even if one gem a year is drafted on D in the later round by luck , that is not a good % rule to build a franchise. |
