Yes, Koivu is better, but in that era they were already talking about him "sitting in the wrong chair" (first line center).

Difference is that they moved a couple of guys to give him that spot (Damphousse, Turgeon).

I don't know if there is any truth to this, but word is that he wasn't that much of a team player and didn't worked well with competition inside the room. Would explain his feuds with Ribeiro, maybe he saw in him someone who could steal his job. Part of it is probably Ribeiro being an ass as well.
