Probably figured if they gave it to Kazakhstan they'd pretty much be confirming they're doing it for the sweet sweet oil and gas money.

so the winter Olympics bidding came down to a city in Kazakhstan and a city that hosted the summer Olympics 7 years ago. maybe we should just stop them for a few decades.

They have become a money pit no one wants to touch.
The IOC is just as bad as the FIFA.

Depends if they plan on using a lot of existing infrastructure or build from the ground up.

If they choose the former, what do they do with the money earmarked for payoffs?

World Cup is different, especially for countries with most of the infrastructure in place (as opposed to Brazil and Qatar). cannot imagine anyone who would want the Olympics anywhere near their city.

Qatar's World Cup is going to be hilarious. Their national team has only ever lost one match in the past year on home soil Also

Eight of the Asian Cup squad of 23 were born overseas as the country seeks to solve the problem of how to become a football power with a native population of only 300,000. In the past decade or so, Qatar has naturalised a number of athletes from African countries, especially Kenya, who have helped their new country increase its medal tally at international and continental tournaments. Perhaps the best-known is Saif Saaeed Shaheen, formerly known as Stephen Cherono, who won gold at the 2003 and 2005 World Championships.

In 2004, a trio of Bundesliga-based Brazilian players -- Werder Bremen's Ailton and Bourssia Dortmund duo Dede and Leandro -- were persuaded to play for Qatar despite having no connections to the country.

my favourite part about this World Cup is how everyone is just pretending that the workers being brought in to construct the stadiums aren't dying by the truckload.
