Not for marketing. There may be more to the job of President, but in any capacity, marketing directly relates back selling the product. - sambarugh
i dont think much overall revenue comes from ticket sales. Advertising within the stadium, advertising with the team outside of the stadium...licensed merchandise, corporate boxes, etc are all bigger money makers than the actual tickets.

We've had this argument before. The NHL is growing at a steady pace. It's never going to be at the level of the big 3. It just isn't. Before the Sportsnet deal, NBC gave the NHL its biggest TV deal in history, something ESPN wasn't willing to do. The caveat was to give NBC exclusive rights. As a fan, I don't like that, but any NHL exec who doesn't take a deal like that should be fired on the spot. - buffalofan19
TSN has Canadian rights along with other networks, why was it different in the states?

I can't understand why the NHL is so stubborn to not get on ESPN to go with their coverage on NBC and NHL network
45 or so games a week is enough to keep everyone happy and like it or not, the nhl fan base grows in the states if on ESPN - homiedclown

Look at the companies the Bills get to advertise and then look at the companies the Sabres get and tell me there isn't a big difference. That's all about marketing. Hopefully, Brandon helps the Sabres get a bigger presence in that regard. - buffalofan19
Just hope it doesn't turn into "Oh, you want to advertise with the Bills, well you need to also advertise X amount with the Sabres too" and it lead to some sponsors walking. |

NBC and ESPN get what 1 game a week each. CBS and FOX get 2 depending on market.
Then you have the broadcast rights to the superbowl. |

Easy as pie, each season ticket hold gets a prepaid Sabres card that has $100 on it to use throughout the season on concessions or merchandise. Of course that is not my 1.5 Million dollars so I can say that no issue. - ImThatGuy
We get a certain percentage on a Sabres card. But it's really not that much. I think for our seats we get like $75.
Big whoop. |

Yes, ESPN automatically lends legitimacy to whatever sport it shows. But with the NHL the list of "why's" could go on forever. |

I would think some of it has to do with the fact that each franchise has a TV deal of it's own as well due to the amount of games they play each season.
NFL teams don't have individual TV contracts the same way that the NHL teams do. |

@Buffalofan19
I think a prime example of the Sabres being below the Bills and advertising and such, the evidence is in the TV advertising. As popular as we think the Sabres are, its the same 4 commercials over and over all season long. |

They have four because the NFL essentially prints money. The NHL does not. People forget how little coverage the NHL got even when it was on ESPN before the 2005 lockout. It was relegated to Thursday nights with little studio coverage. Then, they tried to make the NHL pay the production costs for the next TV contract, which is unheard of. Even in the last contract, ESPN didn't come close. In fact, if I recall correctly, even FOX offered more money in anticipation of their new sports network. |

Sportsnet now has exclusive rights to Canadian broadcasts, with the rights to sublease the coverage to CBC or someone else. And they paid extra for it. It's the exact same deal now. |

No way is that about marketing. It's about money. Dr. Reeb isn't going to able to afford NFL ad space. |

Don't forget that College ball in the near future will be every day but Sun/Mon so eventually nights will be CFB so all the spots that the nhl would go wont work. |

Good marketing absolutely does convince a bigger company that ad space in an NHL arena, or even that the exorbitant amount of money you need for NFL ad space is worth it. |

also, I should know the answer but for some reason I don't. I a ton of NHL teams go on fox sports blank, how much different would it be to put big games on regular fox? |

The local Fox Sports channels are negotiated team by team, similar to what MSG has with the Sabres.
Fox and Fox Sports 1 would need a TV deal with the NHL to put games on nationally. They can't get one because NBC is paying the NHL not to let them. It's guaranteed money. |
