Why is it that every guy that could be intriguing to me to help us out on D is a righty?? - HonkFortheGoose
Forgot who said it but a while back someone compared a LH D man to a Lefty SP in the majors with a great fastball. Great ones are few and far between. |

Mattias Ekholm.
6'4, lefty. Scored 7 goals last year and is 25.
Nashville has Jones, Weber, Ellis, Josi, and Jackman already.

So, the glass half full scenario is that the Rangers have locked up their number one center for a long time. The glass half empty is that the Stepan signing leaves the Rangers with only $1.025 in available salary cap space for the 2014-15 season. Not much cushion at all for GM Jeff Gorton to head into the season with.
I smell a trade coming.
Don't be surprised if Gorton trades a defenseman. He has two plausible candidates in lefty Keith Yandle and right Dan Girardi.
Yandle, the slick puck mover, will become UFA next July and will earn $5.75 this season. Yandle, like UFA Cody Franson, has suffered from a dip in stock price due to a soft Stanley Cup playoffs. Girardi, 31, shoots right, eats and blocks shots and makes a great first pass to streaking forwards. Girardi will earn $5.5 million for the next 4 seasons.
I can see Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray lurking in the shadows. Murray is looking to add a veteran D to his formidable D corps. Murray has salary cap space. Gorton does not.

Neither of those numbers are correct.

It does make a difference. You want to try and be balanced. It's not unheard of to have more of one than another, but overall it makes more sense to have it split.
That said, Pysyk played on the left all season in Rochester and it's been said that Risto can play either side as well. |

Little strong of a word there. It's certainly not a necessity.. but it's nice. When all is said and done, this roster will be looked at by Top Men and will be determined, if a quality righty is available, who can swap to the left side. I'm sure someone can. |

I don't think Risto has played the left hand side yet, I think they said he might because out of anyone he has the most talent and smarts to learn it |

Yeah, I'm not sure on that either. I just know that it was mentioned that he could play on the opposite side this year.
Not sure that I'm a fan of it to be quite honest. I think you set back his development by doing that. |

It was Paul Hamilton or someone on WGR after the draft. He (they) said were looking for a LHD, but it's possible Risto could switch sides.

I was thinking that but he's the captain. It's unfortunate because we only signed him to make it look like we were trying not to totally tank and now we're stuck with him. |

Seems a lot of people around here thought it was Girgensons last week.
I would probably say either Foligno or Larsson. I think in some sort of a package deal you could get a decent return for either of them and I don't see there being enough room for both of them on the roster. Especially in another year or two. |
