Exactly, that works against him with guys like Dumoulin who the pens favour. Pens have to drop a d man for Cledening to sniff the 7 spot.
- nelson911

Unless he's an emergency injury call up, if he's up he's got to stay up. It'll be a bit of a tight rope for you guys, because he's not quite there yet. It'd be nice if he had a few more NHL games under his belt, but that's what happens when you are a defenceman that spends most of your entry level contract with the Blackhawks.

If that was the aim I think slotting Bonino on the 3rd line on a non-contender team would have achieved that objective just fine.

My point is, the word is Benning was working on this deal for months. WTF for? Work on the areas of need, don't work on non-need areas to overpay for a 10% upgrade.

- AlexF

Whose word is that?

Anyways, maybe he sees a better fit for the future. I agree that D should be a priority and wish we could have secured better prospects at the draft for the future. Our top 3 D are still pretty good however, it's just patchwork after that.

Actually, Pens now have 9 D who are either on 1-way contracts, or not going to be sent down.
Letang, Maata, Cole, Pouliot, Dumoulin, Lovejoy, Scuderi, Erixson and Clendening.

Logjam. You must be moving one or else why insist on Clendenning. It'd be brutal to lose one to waivers.

Yep! Between a bunch of 6/7 defensemen.... Those names may look good in a couple years, but not yet.

I'm thinking Scuderi along with maybe Dumoulin for a cheap forward and possibly sign Franson. Let Erixon go through waivers.

Pretty sure that Lovejoy will be using a cane in a couple of years.

Yep, I think Erixon will be put on waivers and one D will be moved allowing Clendening to possibly be the 7th guy.

Erixon was only acquired because he counted as a contract.

Yeah....I was referring to some of the others. The list will look better with the subtraction of his name. Lol

Who's the actual shut down guys? That's a pretty mobile D that should put up some points, but Franson's not going to help you defensively.

Letang and Maata. Letang actually plays that role every year but never gets credit for it.

He's played mostly with Downie, Bennett and Spaling.

Bonino played mostly with Higgins, Vrbata, Burrows.

I agree Bonino has had better linemates, but that doesn't make up for the difference in salary to me, especially considering Sutter will likely get a raise.

- Nucker101

Do you like Bonnino more than Sutter? Why are you so worked up over $1.4MM in salary?

Daniel Sedin @ 3.5 Million CAP

What about the multiple Pens fans saying the same thing? Should we take your word over theirs as well?
- Nucker101

Generally the team that gets the best player wins the trade....and to be honest, I'm neutral on this one and won't pass judgement until I've seen Sutter in our jersey for a few months. I just find the "sky is falling crowd hilarious." And I trust my opinion over penguins fans but I don't expect you too. They had a hate on him from day one as they missed Stall

I honestly feel they could get a better deal elsewhere from a team that has more in the system.

I won't disagree with this.

Don't forget, as I posted a few weeks ago Aquillini has fired the past 2 GM's following a missed playoff appearance ( once he had controlling interest of the team ).

In order to execute a plan you have to be around to see it through. If the directive is to try to remain competitive in the meantime then that's what you have to try to do. The Leafs are a shining example of a team that has failed, whereas Detroit is a shining example of a team that has succeeded. They're entering their 3rd corps of players without having missed the playoffs once.

- golfingsince

Aquilini deserves more hate for wanting to earn a profit? He has always spent to the cap and has agreed to step away from operations. We could do a lot worse. Linden, aquilini, Benning...talk about a thankless job lol

Letang's amazing when healthy, which makes the hole that much bigger when he's not.

I don't know. You guys are going to score an obscene amount of goals next season, but I have no idea how you're going to stop them.

I don't like the trade, but not because I think Bonino is the better player, only because they gave up one of very few young d prospects they have, and dropped lower in draft picks, even if its only a handful.

As far as the money is concerned, I don't give too poops what anyone is making, it's not like there were any key FA's out there that they should have signed. Cap space will be available when the time comes.

Do you understand how hard it is to do your job effectively if you have to have your primary focus on the coming year instead of possibly the 5-10 years following it?

This is what 3 journalists in Calgary, Pittsburgh, and Edmonton are saying about the Canucks' trade today:

"I think this was a good example of someone's perceived value outweighing their actual value. Sutter is regarded by many as a very good defensive forward who can produce some offense. In reality, he's actually a possession anchor and he generally doesn't produce much. Sutter had 59 points over the last two seasons while Bonino - in nine less games - had 88 points. Despite that, the Canucks had to throw in a prospect and a higher draft pick to get a deal done."
- A Calgary journalist

"Penguins' GM Jim Rutherford and his army of Assistant General Managers were able to target a franchise that values the wrong things and took advantage of them. The Vancouver Canucks have been a mess the last few seasons and are believers in what the Penguins used to think was valuable."
-A Pittsburgh journalist

"Any time a division rival makes themselves worse it should be something we keep our eyes on. The Canucks have earned a reputation for making backwards moves. The Luongo deal, the Schneider deal, the Kesler deal, signing Miller. The laughs just keep coming from the Canucks organization."
-An Edmonton journalist

Benning has made the Vancouver Canucks a joke.
