I think it was Bourque that soured it...

There are a few teams out there that could take their scoring and really compete for the cup. I would expect a huge deal for them if that type of salary was retained.

I think Benning will have a good deadline and draft for next season. Would like to see Vrbata and Burrows moved for some picks at the deadline, Higgins too, but he has little value it seems. Despite some questionable moves, I think JB will pull it together eventually. Just hard to see as a fan.

I don't like the trade, but not because I think Bonino is the better player, only because they gave up one of very few young d prospects they have, and dropped lower in draft picks, even if its only a handful.

As far as the money is concerned, I don't give too poops what anyone is making, it's not like there were any key FA's out there that they should have signed. Cap space will be available when the time comes.

I not thrilled with the trade, but I'm not going to lose my shlt over it either. In the end I'd prefer they hoarded draft picks or else target young Defencemen or defensive prospects.

Don't worry about Scooby. He thought Tostitos was the answer.

But we lost Bonnino. Our franchise is doomed forever

It looks like he's paying too much, or not getting enough for the trades he's making, but he was handed a loaf of mouldy bread and the fans want him to make a triple decker pastrami on rye, with english mustard and a pickle.

Hard to see his plan, but i'm sure he has one. If Vrbata isn't dealt then i'll become quite concerned. Burrows deal will likely happen the year after. Deconstructing and re-constructing a team doesn't happen overnight.

Do you understand how hard it is to do your job effectively if you have to have your primary focus on the coming year instead of possibly the 5-10 years following it?

Wild speculation. I don't think it's unreasonable for an owner to request playoff revenue while slowly rebuilding to the future. If you want a full tank I recommend Edmonton

I'm not suggesting a full tank. Remember, this is the owner that has fired the GM the last 2 times they missed the playoffs. If they miss the playoffs a year or two I don't think it's the end of the world. Becoming a contender again should be the priority as the revenue associated with that is far, far greater than a couple of home games.

It's probably got something to do with gnomes and maybe underpants.

Love those!!

Anyways, the plan to get younger is obvious. It will be interesting to see what Vey and Sven bring to the lineup this year. That's 2 2nd round picks these past couple of drafts. A guy that prides himself on scouting shouldn't be giving those up easily.

I fully agree with you....unfortunately, this City is has fair weather fans and as a business owner it's tough to take a 50% capacity arena. I went to 75% of the games last year and was picking up tickets at $25 some nights. Pathetic. I suspect he wants a couple years of a tank but can't stomach the losses. All I'm saying as I can't Blame the guy

Wether or not people like this trade. Change is exciting. Our core is turning over and I'm grateful. I was pretty sick and tired of the old, soft core

This is what 3 journalists in Calgary, Pittsburgh, and Edmonton are saying about the Canucks' trade today:

"I think this was a good example of someone's perceived value outweighing their actual value. Sutter is regarded by many as a very good defensive forward who can produce some offense. In reality, he's actually a possession anchor and he generally doesn't produce much. Sutter had 59 points over the last two seasons while Bonino - in nine less games - had 88 points. Despite that, the Canucks had to throw in a prospect and a higher draft pick to get a deal done."
- A Calgary journalist

"Penguins' GM Jim Rutherford and his army of Assistant General Managers were able to target a franchise that values the wrong things and took advantage of them. The Vancouver Canucks have been a mess the last few seasons and are believers in what the Penguins used to think was valuable."
-A Pittsburgh journalist

"Any time a division rival makes themselves worse it should be something we keep our eyes on. The Canucks have earned a reputation for making backwards moves. The Luongo deal, the Schneider deal, the Kesler deal, signing Miller. The laughs just keep coming from the Canucks organization."
-An Edmonton journalist

Benning has made the Vancouver Canucks a joke.

What a bunch of BS from those guys.....notice how its oilers flames and of course the team who just parted with sutter. That says a lot. Pretty funny how the edmonton guy talks about the team producing laughs yet his team has been the joke of the nhl for a decade.

Dont let these goof balls get to you, theyre just mouth pieces hiding behind screens and the articles they write. These clowns wouldnt last a day in the real world.

We're all in agreement that Benning gave up too much. Where we disagree is how Sutter slots in on the Canucks vs Bonino.
- golfingsince

Yes he gave up too much. What I wonder about is why he seems to be getting schooled this summer where last year he was given 2 thumbs up by just about everyone.....even some oilers guys. Now it seems he suddenly turned rookie. What the hell happened? Head injury?

Way overreacting to losing Bonino n Clendenning.
Sutter allows Bo to be 2LC n has more versatility than Bonino.
Clendenning is no big loss n u move minor assets to fill holes.
Expect max 4m/3-4yrs for Sutter. That will look better as yrs go by.
Cole Cassels n Jared McCann will need prolly 2-3yrs to develop.

Hutton n Subban can do anything Clendenning was gonna do.
Prolly both r 2-3yrs away.
Expect D to be drafted in 2016 n prolly TDL deals as in Vrbata +

Even if all three trades were awful, the comparisons don't hold. The first two were under Gillis. So you can't make organizational comparisons.

If the Oilers turn the corner, it will only be due to gross incompetency over many years and that's more about the ridiculous draft rules. The Oiler name is appropriate though as hearing them brag about their riches now is like a Middle East petro-dictator brag about his wealth. Wow, you mean you accomplished this shiny city in the desert through ingenuity.
