Pens fan here. You guys will either love or like Sutter...no in between. Our fans were tough on him because i think a lot of people thought he would be just like Jordan Staal...totally not the case..2 different players. Sutter will give you decent 2-way play. He can score goals and is positionally sound. He plays more stick on stick; he's not physical like staal is.

Overall you're getting a quality player. He was never going to sniff anything close above 3c with us. Perhaps he'll be a solid 2c for your team.

Cheers.

Sutter is soffffff ... but he can score in the postseason so ? just don't EVER expect him to win a battle on the boards, if you do you'll be disappointed.

edit: his nickname on Pens thread was 'Sutturd'

Lets be honest. The "on the fly" is not voluntary. Gillis made sure of it with these contracts you applaud him for. Who cares what party line was told to the media. Don't be a sheep. Use some common sense.
- boonerbuck

Exactly. It's odd...I do enjoy the majority of Nuckers posts but there are times when he offers no logic whatsoever. Gillis handucffed this team and turned us into Flames 2.0 with the NTC's and ridiculous contracts. Benning has started the process of fixing that and now he's not happy? Very bizarre regardless of how he thinks Benning is spending the cash. Bottom line is Benning made this team better last season which I didn't think was possible given the circumstances. Now he is clearing space for the youth finally and people are pissed off??

What space? He traded a roster player and got a roster player. If the only thing standing between Horvat and 2LC was Bonino, why wouldn't it be the same with Sutter? Benning clearly values Sutter over Bonino.

Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks Trade Bonino, Clendening to Pittsburgh for Brandon Sutter
Jim Benning shocked us out of our summer slumber on Tuesday when he traded Nick Bonino and Adam Clendening to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Brandon Sutter and an exchange of draft picks.

Actually, Sutter brings no grit or defensive play. He's dynamic with open space and has a great wrist shot. Otherwise he's pretty useless.
- cranktheradio

Ya 21 goals is useless and one of the best PK guys in the league.

His time in PIT had come and gone and clearly he did not want to be there last season.

It's ok you can move on.

He shoots the puck well and can skate fast from A to B. Everything else he does is mediocre at best, actually harmful at worst.

He was pretty good on the PK, 4 of his goals came from SHG, 3 from the PP. Either forehand backhand, or a laser from the right side on a 1v1.

At even strength, he is pretty useless. He's not a shutdown C, and he can't create anything offensively. Pay attention next year on how easily he is knocked off the puck and how many times the wind blows him over.

Wish him all the best, but don't be expecting any savior here in him. I always defended him on how he didn't have good line mates, but come to find out that's just Sutter normally.

If he can't stay on his skates I don't care how good he is in other areas. Raymond 2.0 would piss me off to no end.

He really is not that good on his skates. It frustrated me to no end, as well as every other Pens fan. Honestly he'd skate the puck into the zone and it's either a shot on net (or around the net) or he tries to peel back and wait for team mates, but then gets knocked down.

Not trying to tear the guy down, just telling it how it is. He will have some visually pleasing goals though, but other than that his play is extremely frustrating.

If Benning extends him to anything over 5mil per year, then you guys are in for some trouble. His goal total will get him a raise, even though it's not warranted at all.

Peter Chiarelli actually. So far his GMing offspring are reTannered. I can't wait to see the mess he leaves behind in Edmonton in about half a decade.

Not sure how it looks to you but regardless of getting roster players back spots will open up. Bonino gone opens up 2LC for Horvat and Bieksa gone opens up a D spot for Corrado most likely. Lack gone opens up a spot for Markstrom. they will move things around for Sven or Virtanen to slot in. So it's confusing to see the call for youth here on the blogs but now that the process is well under way we have the waaaah waaaah waaaah fest going on.

I would value Sutter over Bonino too he is a complete upgrade in EVERY way except Bonino had a slightly better release and wrist shot.

It won't matter the mess he leaves once he gets that team back into contention...and he will.

I'm definitely going to be watching some VAN games this season, I don't think he'll improve but you never know.

I know for one I would have been thrilled with just a Bonino + 2nd for Sutter + 3rd swap, no clue how we managed to snag Clendening too.. Hopefully he flourishes in our puck moving D system.

Best of luck

Bonino actually generates offense, and drives play in the right direction.

Looking at Sutter's AS, the only positive I can derive from them is that he started most of his shifts in the defensive end ~40% but he finished off in the other end ~50% of the time.

That's what I don't get. If Sutter is that much better than isn't he as big or bigger an obstacle as Bonino was? I agree that a lot of what Benning has done opens up room for younger players, but I don't think yesterday's trade does at all.

I'm willing to eat crow when the season starts, and I hope I do, but for now it doesn't make a ton of sense to me. It's the backend that has the gaping hole. (Heh heh)

It does open up a spot if you were to believe that Sutter is clearly better than Bonino, and that it was worth trading Clendenning to get him. 2 players replaced by 1 good centreman, and another roster spot open for a guy like Virtanen.

Edit: disregard the 2nd half of this post.

In the end, we're getting heated over a swap of 3Cs and a fringe Defenceman.

I'm over it now, but a voice in the back of my head keeps telling me that they might've fared better if they had presented that trade to other teams.

The question for me is: Did they get the best player the could have given what they gave up? Could they have gotten a better player from someone else?

If the answer to my questions is yes, boy are the Canucks in a heap of trouble.

I'm willing to see how it plays out though before I jump to any conclusions. Sutter might turn it all around in Vancouver and become a 30 goal guy. *nervously giggles*

Hopefully he is more like a Foligno instead of a Semin.

I’m no fan of the Pens, in fact most of the time I find their fans to be irritating and overbearing, but in this instance I can confirm that the Pens fans have wanted sutter gone for two years. This isn’t a case of them ripping him now that he’s been traded, they’ve been ripping him for two years. The last guy I saw traded after that kind of fan negativity was Andrew Macdonald, and flyers fans assumed he was far better (because blocked shots!) and now they can't wait to find someone to shovel him off to.

Sutter may have scored 20 goals, but you’re going to hate how he plays.

Edit for clarity – you didn’t give up a ton, but you gave the Pens a little added depth and cap relief, and if sutter is signed to a long term contract it’ll look worse.

I just don’t understand the reasoning behind it. Sutter isn’t an upgrade, you lose a young prospect on d, downgrade on the draft pick and now have to either commit more money to sutter or risk losing him as a ufa? What is benning doing?

Maybe, just maybe he's setting us up for 1st overall in 2016?

Who's projected as a number 1? Auston Matthews

Boom.

That's what he's doing and he's doing it without making it look like he's trying. Word.

LOL. We were just a few months ago.

Stop thinking we're anywhere near a lottery team, as much as we all wish we were for a few seasons.

- AlexF

Canucks sorely needed a RHC for right side face offs in their own end. Boninos face offs ended up costing the line 15 seconds of a 45 second shift chasing the puck.
