I think I understand why now. Sutter will take mainly defensive zone faceoffs. Vey will take only offensive ones. Lose of richardson, need a legit PK center. Net front presence on the 2nd pp. He replaces Mathias 20 goals. - manvanfan
Another point is before today our only RHC was Vey. Sutter now is available for right hand draws |

Some incredibly narrowminded thinking in here today.
Gotta admit that I'm not the biggest fan of the trade but its not all horrible either.
a) Benning opens up one more roster space for a younger player who WILL get ice time - isnt that what everyone is female doging about?
b) The Canucks continue to get bigger and grittier - isnt that what everyone is female doging about?
We were manhandled in the Calgary series and Benning is addressing that - not sure what the problem is. Offensively Bonino LOOKS better tha Sutter but his production is marginally better while Sutter makes up for it in FO's an dgrit.
Clendening was never going to get a fair shot and may never become a regular, Hes already on his 3rd team....i dont know guys.... |

agreed, i predict CAssels will pass G eventually, just not this season.
I say Cassels needs more seasoning. Grit can come from the wingers.
What we really need is someone strong the f/o dot. - dbot
hasn't gaunce been converted to a winger?
i thought i read that if he is to make the team, he will do so as a bottom 6 winger.
if anything, i bet that gaunce gets a call up or two during the season.
sedin sedin burrows
baertschi horvat vrbata
higgins sutter prust
dorsett vey hansen
kenins
that's what i think. you can mix and match the bottom 4 wingers.
virtanen gets his 9 game tryout so that's an x factor. mccann may get a 9 game shot depending on whether he has an outstanding camp.
i think cassells will be a call up during the season. |

Ultimately Sutter and Prust in makes the Canucks more difficult to play against which is what is seriously lacking...... |

IMO they are grittier. I don't look at Sutter as a tough guy but he sure is grittier than Bonino |

You still don't know what the end game will be. Maybe he'll flip Prust for a nice pick at the deadline, maybe Sutter will be moved as well or re-signed to a reasonable deal.
You just need to relax a little. - golfingsince
You're right, I don't know for sure. But just based on honest Jim's comments I'll assume he values Sutter highly wants to lock him up. And Sutter made 3.5M per as an RFA, so as pending UFA he's likely looking for both more money and more term.
Benning seems really old school, wouldn't be surprised if he actually wants Prust here the entire season to "mentor" and "protect" the kids who apparently going to be in the lineup. |

A) Clendening is a young player.
B) agreed
C) I don't think its the player, it's more what we gave up to get the player. I personally would have been happy with player fo player and picks or even Bonino and clendening for sutter but to lose a young D and trade down. Whether it's 1 or 30 picks, it's still trading down. Usually you get two lower picks if you trade down not to give up a player too.

So you have it as Veys job to lose?
Like I said earlier this summer , if Vey is your number 4 centre , and I am Cole Cassels , I skate right over to Vey and say drop me, we are going to fight. - VANTEL
Yes, I think WD will start camp with him ahead of every rookie on the center depth chart. And they'll have to clearly outplay him to move past him. |

Just because Clendening is a younger player doesnt mean he is a NHL player......3rd team in 2 years - says something..... |

1) Sutter is replacing Bonino...where is the roster space? Unless you consider Clendening a veteran who was keeping a spot away from a youngster
2) Sutter isn't gritty, he gets like 10-20 PIM's max, he throws the odd hit and goes to the net, but he's not a tough or hard player to play against that other team's or their fans hate. He was a whipping boy for a reason, guys who are hard to play against are usually loved by their fans.
3) Sutter and Bonino are similar talents.
4) I actually agree that Clendening is nothing special, honestly would have just preferred to keep Forsling in hindsight. |

hey buddy. long time.
anyway, i'm putting him at 2nd line b/c he is waiver eligible. as benning paid a not insignificant price for the youngster, i think he gets every chance to succeed.
obviously, his chances to show his potential are running out but based on the canucks' lack of scoring, i think he starts on the top 6.
that certainly doesn't mean that he ends up there at the end of the season. |

1) Clendening has to clear waivers therefore he HAS a roster spot, that spot has now opened up - not hard math is it?
2) PIM's are not the sole indicator of gritty - Kassian had more PIMs than Sutter and I assure you no one believes that Kassian is a grittier player
3) Cool
4) Its a wash to me

1) You said it opened up a rooster spot for a younger player, Clendening is 22 (frank)ing years old.
2) Kassian is definitely more feared, tougher and intimidating than Sutter. Not even close.
3) You admit defeat on that one, good. At least you're 33% right so far.
4) Not a wash with the cap, draft picks and wasted asset(Clendening or Forsling, however you want to look at it). |

1) The younger player needs to be able to PLAY in the NHL - just because Clendening is younger doesnt mean he should get a shot - pretty simple. Now there is a spot open for a younger player WHO deserves to be there
2) What the (frank) does fear have to do with grit? You clearly dont understand what gri tis
3) Defeat? huh?
4) Holy poop - this isnt NHL15....80% of drafted players NEVER make the NHL - thats a lot of "wasted assets".....not sure what your point is really |

Kassian == Semin.......he hits for about 5 games a year - softest 6'3" winger in the league outside of Shawn Mathias.... |
