BTW what exactly did the Pens lose in this deal? Jordan Staal and a 3rd turned into Pouliot, Dumo, Bonino, Clendening, and a 2nd round pick.

They traded an upcoming UFA who was too expensive to keep for a cheaper player who adequately fills the spot for two more seasons, a better draft pick, and a prospect.

They didn't lose out on anything, the cap space and security of that roster spot next season is pretty good.

They don't free up any room, though.

A roster spot, maybe, but then you can just scratch the guy. A buyout still counts full-value against their cap.

- BINGO!

It saves them a Million in actual cash. As a team that will be nowhere near the cap, it makes sense.

Because fancy stats and not winning board battles, or something.

How is losing puck battles irrelevant? That combined with poor passing makes it seem like he lacked some very rudimentary skills.

Personal jabs aren't good form but to be fair, people have shown bad form towards RW for a while. It's totally cool to disagree, especially with analytics if you're not a metrics guy but people insult his intelligence on a blog by blog basis for one reason or another and call him a hack when he is, in al honesty, one of the best bloggers on this site and churns out material on a super consistent basis which has facilitated plent of great conversations and probably the strongest fan community on this site. He has the right to get annoyed. The call out is excusable in my book.

I'm not afraid to bash Sutter, the player. As a person, he's great. But that just isn't relevant. This is sports. He is paid to perform. He doesn't fit what the team is constructing. He's a passenger. He simply isn't a long term solution. That is clear.

I'm actually surprised that JR was able to get the return he did. I was expecting far less. Goes to show you how some GMs are still susceptible to idiotic moves based on familiarity. Benning might want to keep his things packed.

Bonino is an upgrade and it isn't even close. 2nd rounder? Awesome. Clendening? Cherry on top. Totally worth throwing in the 3rd.

I remember when we were wondering if he'd just get us a 2nd rounder. When combined with the ability to get Fehr, this was a big win.

They need to spend time in the military where they'll learn how insignificant their feelings are.

Yeah if i'm RW I/m probably not throwing out jabs before this team has even set foot on the ice. Do I think they've improved up front? of course.. they look better on paper, but there are still querstion marks, lots of reports are saying Bonino is extremly slow, weak on the puck and poor at faceoffs, and as well Plotnikov and Bennett are both question marks as well as the 12th spot which will probably be a WBS promotion. Not saying none of those guys will work out, hopefully they all do, but are still questions marks.

Also, alot of our forward upgrades has been possible due to money free'd up on the back end, and has come at the expense of our D depth. Yes, Let the young guys play, but our D is certainly not as good as last year. A lot has to go right for that group to be able to hang with the big boys.

From the last blog too RW made a comparison of this years forward depth vs last years...this years line up was based on a completely healthy compliment of forwards, the line up he chose to use as his comparison was from an injury riddled period of time.

Regardless, I am excited for the new season to start and I feel the same hope and promise about this squad as you all do, but if I'm RW I may have chose to save my "told you so" until this team actually proves something.

Got a prospect that will need to be waived when he doesn't make the team.

Bones will only disappoint if you expect something from him. He will be there, wont be bad, wont be good, just will fill the hole until the next line comes out.

- Lostinarink

I seen every game last year of the Canucks , I listened to every Utica comets game.

Go ahead and believe these East Coast writers who may have viewed 20 games as a group. Your choice

Clendenning and Bonino both moved last year and were given bigger roles and both got demoted and traded again. Maybe third times a charm.

The best player that got moved yesterday was Sutter. As soft as you think he is wait until you see Bonino. Sutter is a slight upgrade over Bonino, not much , but slight.

Bonino does not have a good two way game. He is slow and better suited for the wing seeing he is terrible at face offs. He is not a checker nor a defensive player. He would be better suited playing on Gino's wing.

If you don't believe me go sad the article Canucks Army just wrote saying exactly the same.

Shocking a team that just traded a player away now bashes said player. Look what was said about Hamilton, Seguin, Neal, heck even Despres, after they were traded. Gotta spin things to make it look positive.

Look at the Canucks fans posts from back when the Kesler trade happened...nothing but good things and excitement from both Anaheim and Vancouver.

It's one of the reasons I never take jabs at EK. He provides something of value to me for free. FREE. His "rumors" are largely ridiculous, but who am I to criticize a guy giving me something for free.

This is America and a hockey blog...we have to criticize everyone and everything.

I hope things work out for him too. Sometimes when the games really mattered he seemed like one of the only players giving 110%
- MattStrat

I think ts just a misconception because every other game (95% of the time) he gave no real effort. If the talent is truly there like what he's shown in "big games" well then I say he is lazier than Alex Semin.

edit: if Max Lapierre was Russian, would he be labelled the laziest player in the NHL?

Not sure what you were reading. At the time, Vancouver fans were happy with the return given the circumstances but no one - but no one - was excited or thought Van had "won" the trade. The big item, as far as I was concerned, from Anaheim was the first round draft pick.

Same thing can be said for fans of a franchise over valueing their returns on a trade/free agent signing/prospects ,ect.. Which many Pens fans on this board (myself included) are guilty of.

I agree, but as a paid writer for this site, I think that he should take the high road be the better man. Maybe write, "The Penguins were luckily able to acquire depth without having to trade a player like Evgeni Malkin," as opposed to basically saying, "Told you so, (frank)ers!"
- jmatchett383

Why does he have to take the high road? Just because he's a blogger? People are people. Nobody likes taking crap and its fun to needle people who give you poop and are adamant that there is only one possible way to do thing and refuse to listen to reason.

Also interesting that "(frank)ers" makes it through the filter.

Edit: Apparently it only shows up in the quoting.
